Retired farmer and insurance salesman George Jacob “G.J.” Mecherle founded State Farm in 1922. His motivation was simple: to be fair and do the right thing for his customers.
The first State Farm Road Atlas was published in 1937. Ever since then, we’ve helped people get where they want to go.

In 1971, a relatively unknown composer wrote the music for our new theme song “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.” His name? Barry Manilow.
Recognizing that our customers expected great service around the clock, we created Customer Response Centers to deliver help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Statefarm.com went live in 1995. Today, customers use statefarm.com to get rate quotes, check claims, find an agent, plan for retirement, pay bills, and more.
We made high-octane history in 2006, becoming the first property and casualty insurer ever to help promote a major feature film: the Disney/Pixar animated feature, CARS.
In 2002, State Farm went green. We started measuring our greenhouse gas emissions, and we added hybrid and flex fuel cars to our company fleet. By 2008, we had reduced our emissions intensity by 46%, more than double the goal we set for 2012.
