About Us
It was September 1905 that the dream and myth began moving into reality. Names like Beckwourth, Bartnett, Gould, Bogue, Keddie, Norris, Gwin, Yard and a legion more, each with their own stories pushed, shoved and nudged the new railroad down the Feather River Canyon, connecting Salt Lake with San Francisco. The last spike, it is said was driven on November 1, 1909 at Spanish Creek in Plumas County. The cost of construction was steep, even by today's standards. The costs ranged from $3,500 per mile on the desert flats to $100,000 per mile in the canyon.
The railroad was first thought of as a means to transport the vast amounts of timber and mineral deposits which were discovered as the railroad was being planned. However, as these treasures played out, the railroad began promoting the West as a new frontier for settlement and adventure. Passenger service began in Oroville with an enormous celebration the month of August of 1910. This year also marked the opening of the Oroville Western Pacific Depot.
The Railroad built or encouraged attractions along the rail in an effort to develop passenger use. The Railroad showed off the new agricultural possibilities in the Central Valley with "introduction gardens", like the one outside the Oroville Depot. These gardens or parks were planted with examples of the varied and, at that time exotic new crop possibilities. Oranges, olives, dates, persimmons and avocado thrived in the Mediterranean climate and greeted the new arrivals from the East.
It was June 25, 1934 that the Western Pacific passenger train, the Zephyr, made its first stop in Oroville. The Zephyr ran until 1970 marking the end of scheduled passenger service through Oroville.
The Depot Restaurant opened September 13, 1977.
