January 2016

President's Corner

Hi Everyone!
Last week I attended the ASU West #ReflectMLK Celebration.  I was extremely impressed with each of the individuals who won awards for their artwork and essays.  What an exceptional group of students!  I was honored to be invited to attend.
With the help of a step stool,
3rd Grader Abby Gardner gives her speech about her Grandfather

I was especially impressed by the
2016 Student Servant/Leadership Awardee
, Jasmine Anglen.
Jasmine spoke about how her conscience prompted her to found All Walks Project, a non-profit providing rehabilitation programs to survivors of sex trafficking in Arizona.  Under Anglen’s leadership, the program received the Edson Student Entrepreneurship Initiative Award of $10,000 and is set to expand nationally.

Peoria residents join Lynda Blackmon Lowery and Police Chief Roy Minter for a walk in honor of Dr. King.  Lynda Blackmon Lowery spoke about her experience marching for civil rights at 15 years old in Selma, Alabama.

Create a New Road Map for 2016
Are you feeling something just isn't working for your business?
Do you need:
·         A checklist to narrow in on what is NOT working?
·         The steps to change those areas in your business?
·         Monitors to keep you on course?

You will leave with a practical assessment of your business life, a new map for the new year and economic and business monitors to help guide you all year long.

This interactive, hands-on course will be facilitated by Debra Roubik—economist, speaker, professor and business consultant.  She has had decades of experience with legislative impact and feasibility studies, as well as business consulting.   So, you will get a comprehensive view from a generalist and practitioner with an MBA in finance and degrees in economics and probability and statistics.

Life Development Institute
Life Development Institute, LDI, located in metropolitan Phoenix, AZ, offers fully accredited high school, post-secondary, and summer academy programs for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, and other learning disabilities.  LDI serves individuals that thrive in a learning environment offering holistic academic and community engagement.  Additionally, LDI embeds adult content and competencies by integrating practical college strategies, refining interpersonal communication skills, determining viable career paths, and promoting social responsibility.

LDI’s mission provides non-traditional, college-capable students a practical and inclusive bridge to improve college/career readiness and success, build cultural competence, and develop personal leadership skills.
Three programs embody this mission.  First, the Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) affords an ideal transition from high school to higher education, employability and better quality of life for high school students.  Second, the Emerging Leaders Summer Academy prepares participants, ages 16 – 26, for the next stages of education as well as transitioning into adult life by harnessing the strengths of each person’s learning styles embedding diversity, cultural and leadership skills that are essential for career and higher education success.  Third, LDI’s 2-year residential program offers three pathways towards placement into community-based higher education, technical and career preparation, occupational training programs, or competitive employment.

New Predictive Policing Technology

Peoria Police Expand Crime Prevention Capabilities with Use of “HunchLab” Predictive Policing Technology

Peoria Police have begun using “HunchLab”, a new predictive policing application which assists patrol officers with crime prevention.  This technology allows the department to calculate the likelihood of specific crimes occurring in particular locations during a set time range.  This information is focused on preventing crime by effectively deploying officers in those areas which are identified by HunchLab.

Regarding this powerful technology, Peoria Police Chief Roy W. Minter commented, “This technology is an additional way for Peoria Officers to provide excellent service to the citizens and ensure a high quality of life and safety.  The Peoria Police Department is the first agency in Arizona to utilize the HunchLab program and we are excited about our recent implementation of the program.”
