February 2016

President's Corner

Hi Everyone!
Many thanks to Debra Roubik of VisionEcon for the exceptional seminar she held on Essential Planning for 2016, at this week's Hot Topics & Lunch.

Several of the people attending made a point to stop in my office and share with me how much they enjoyed the program and how worthwhile it will be for their business for 2016.

If you didn't attend the Ribbon Cutting of the new Colonnade V.I.P. Event Room at The Peoria Sports Complex on Friday afternoon, you really missed an amazing event!

This new event venue has an amazing unobstructed view of the ball field above the third base line, for you to plan your next event.  Contact the Peoria Sport Complex to make your reservations: 623-773-8700.

If you would like to include something in the Luke Bags for the new service people rotating in to Luke Air Force Base with their families, the bags go out this week, so bring your items down.

Make sure you attend Tuesday's breakfast at the Links at Westbrook, Chef Peter always puts out an amazing spread!

If you have any comments or questions please do not hesitate to call me at 623-979-3601, or e-mail me:  gerickson@peoriachamber.com

Carlat’s Citizen's Committee to Examine City Charter for Possible Updates

Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat forms a nine-member committee nominated by City Council members to represent all parts of the City.
The committee to bring recommendations
to council by May 2016
Council will then place any suggested updates in the hands of the voters to decide.
In October, Peoria City Council approved the formation of a citizen committee to comb through the City’s Charter and recommend updates or changes. The City Charter was adopted in 1983 and establishes the roles of governance for the city. A comprehensive citizen review has not been conducted since 1992.

As soon as she took office in 2015, Carlat outlined her intention to strengthen the integrity of local government through transparency and accountability by putting the citizens at the helm of review and modernization of the city’s governing document.

Citizens are encouraged to stay updated and attend the committee meetings. Find details on future meetings at PeoriaAZ.gov.

Citizen’s Committee to Plan for Growth and Quality of Life
Another Carlat initiative that puts citizens at the helm of planning and preparing for future growth held its first meeting this month. The Committee, chaired by former Peoria Mayor John Keegan, has 21 volunteer members who will examine a variety of topics related to the City’s future quality of life and make recommendations to Council by early summer.

Read more about the Quality of Life Committee here

Make your voice heard! Carlat encourages citizens to attend the meetings.
Find details on the next committee meeting here.

Other Cities Travel to Peoria to Learn from Economic Development Strategy

Mayor Carlat recently met with City Council members and
economic development leaders from Henderson, NV.
The group traveled to Peoria to learn more about Peoria’s BioInspire, a medical device incubator, in hopes of modeling something similar in their own city in an effort to drive economic development. BioInspire was launched in conjunction with the City of Peoria.

BioInspire is the medical device incubator/accelerator created through the partnership of BioAccel, Plaza Companies, and the City of Peoria, Arizona. BioInspire offers first-class working space, technical/business assistance and collaborative opportunities for companies that will locate in the City of Peoria as they transition out of the incubator space and into independent biotech ventures. For more information about Peoria’s BioInspire, go to www.peoriaed.com/bioinspire
