Weekly Newsletter 5/11

Sorry for the Delay!

We're sorry for the delay in getting the newsletter out this week but we were having network issues yesterday!

May 2016

President's Corner

Last week I attended two inspiring events that I want to share with you.  On Wednesday I had the privilege to present a $2000 scholarship check to JROTC Cadet Callie Folker from Cactus High School.  This scholarship was from the proceeds of the Wine & Cigars Under the Stars event put on by the Chamber’s Veteran’s & Military Affairs Committee in partnership with Credit Union West.

This young lady was so surprised she covered her face with both hands and did her best to fight back the tears.  As a father with two daughters, this was a real grabber.  I almost cried with her.  The Cadets in the JROTC program are an exceptional group of young people and hearing all the things they have accomplished and received awards for was very impressive.  Given the crazy politics in our country today, this glimpse into our future leaders was very reassuring.

Friday afternoon Ashley and I attended the Special Olympics 2016 State Summer Games.  If you ever want to be truly inspired and humbled all at the same time, just attend one of these.  It really puts into perspective where all of our complaining belongs – these athletes overcome a variety of intellectual disabilities to compete in competitions in track & field, volleyball and weightlifting.

Seeing the determination and the fire in their eyes to succeed was a joy to behold.  Watching the winners of the relays cross the finish line after coming from behind to win had Ashley and I both cheering them on.  I really wanted to see the Opening Ceremony Friday night, with teams from all over Arizona walking in behind the torch, but Mother Nature decided not to cooperate and gave them a torrential downpour.  I’m not sure where in the state next year’s games are held but find out and make it a point to attend, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Some things you won’t want to miss:

Join us for our first New Members Mixer tomorrow tonight at Wine 101.  The full details are in the next column.  Here’s a great chance to meet our new members and introduce yourself.

Join Our Veteran's and Military Affairs Committee!

ATTENTION CHAMBER VETERANS AND VETERAN OWNED BUSINESSES

The Peoria Chamber is seeking Veterans or individuals who want to support Veteran causes and events to join our Veteran’s and Military Affairs Committee.

We currently do a tremendous job with our Wine & Cigars Under the Stars event, supporting the JROTC programs at Peoria & Cactus High Schools, but I believe we can make an even greater difference.

Our Chamber is beginning several new Veteran’s programs and we need people to help us decide the best way for the Chamber to get involved and offer assistance.

There is no cost to be involved nor a huge time commitment, so if helping Veterans is something you would like to be a part of please call Guy at 623-979-3601 or email at gerickson@peoriachamber.com
