May 2016

President's Corner

Well did you miss me?

I was fortunate last week to have a few days off visiting some friends on the East Coast.  My friend Barb is a 15-year breast cancer survivor who has unfortunately just learned the same cancer has returned, this time as lesions on her femur.  My prayers are with her.

On a personal note – I want to publicly thank David Evans from It’s All In The Game for his extremely thoughtful gift of a framed photo collage from Dinner on the Diamond 2016.  David’s efforts were one of the key components to making this year’s event a success.  Thank you David for your memorable gift.

Tonight after work:  New Member Ribbon Cutting at Lucidi Distillery in Historic Fire Station No.1 in Old Town Peoria.  Join Mayor Cathy Carlat, Councilwoman Vicki Hunt and many Chamber Members in welcoming the Distillery as a new Peoria Chamber member!

If you’re free tomorrow after work, make it a point to join us for a combined Peoria Chamber Mixer with the Surprise Chamber.  It’s at the Windmill Inn & Suites on Bell Road and should be a great opportunity for our Peoria members to meet and develop a whole new group of contacts and relationships.  Details in the right hand column.

Look for the opening of Modern Round in P83 in the first couple of weeks in June.  Construction has been moving pretty quickly and it looks to be almost done.  Watch for updates from me but this place looks to be a great place to go. Check them out here: http://www.modernround.com/

Headquarters Grill-Bar-Sushi (http://headquartersaz.com/) is likely right behind with their opening.  I know they are moving as quickly as possible to finish their build outs and get things rolling there.  They are located across the parking lot from Modern Round and across the street from Harkins Theater.

Arizona United Soccer Team is offering a special discount night to all Chamber Members and their families.  The kids get to go down on the field to participate in the “high-five” line with the players.  This should be a great fun evening to enjoy for the whole family.  Details are to the right.

This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, please be safe and enjoy some wonderful times with your family and friends.  While you are enjoying yourselves please take a minute and remember why this holiday was created-  to honor all those who have died while serving in our Armed Forces to keep us safe and free. Say a prayer for their sacrifice.
If you have any comments or questions please do not hesitate to call me at 623-979-3601 or e-mail me at: gerickson@peoriachamber.com

These days, everything is at our fingertips. Talking on the phone has become something of the past and meeting in person? Forget about it!

Texting, Snapchat, and Facebook are the new communicators. So, how do we conform to this? OR how do we break away from this?

Safety Reminders from Peoria Police
Summer Break is here, and the Peoria Police Department would like to offer some information and reminders to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.  We encourage parents and guardians to discuss safety and the following items before summer break.  As always, you can contact the Police Department (623-773-8311) with any questions.
Curfew:
Everyone enjoys being out and about in the evening hours, but please be safe. Remember that the City of Peoria has a curfew law (City Code 13-71).  Peoria officers will continue to enforce these laws throughout the summer.   The law prohibits teens from being in public during certain hours, seven days a week unless accompanied by a legal guardian.  It is also illegal for a parent and/or guardian to allow a minor to be in public during the curfew hours listed below:
15 Years and Under     10pm – 5am
16 – 17 Years Old        12am – 5am

Alcohol:
This time of year police officers often see a rise in underage alcohol offenses, whether it is at parties or behind the wheel of a car.  The Peoria Police Department is committed to the safety of our youth and will continue to aggressively enforce all liquor laws.  Please remember that providing alcohol to minors is illegal.  It is also illegal to host parties where underage consumption takes place, and the homeowner can be responsible for any civil actions.
It is illegal for anyone under twenty-one years of age to possess or consume any amount of alcohol.
All DUI laws also apply to minors and even one drink can result in an arrest.
Driving:
Teens are excited to drive, but please remind your teen that safety is most important!
  • Give your full attention to driving
  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Watch your speed
  • Do not text or allow any other distractions while driving
  • Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
