How long have you been doing business in Prescott? 13 years

How long have you been a Chamber Ambassador? 12 years

What are the benefits of being a Chamber Ambassador?
Being an Ambassador is fun and interesting.  I learn all kinds of information regarding Prescott due to our monthly meetings and the speakers we have.  Also as an Ambassador, I attend the ribbon cuttings of new businesses and learn about who they are, where they are and what they do.  Chamber networking meetings allow me the opportunity to mix with all of the members of the chamber and encourage them and listen to their hope and dreams for their businesses.

If you had one extra day to spend time with anyone, who would that be and why?
My son Brad.  He is my youngest son and the only child I have left.  We are without his older brother and sister as they have gone on to a better life in Heaven with our Lord Jesus, leaving a large open void in our hearts. Brad works very hard to provide for his family, so he has little spare time for himself.  Being a loving husband and father of three of my youngest grand children, it would be wonderful to visit with him on his own and hash out old times and catch up on each other.  I thank God for him and who he has grown up to be.

Who has inspired you (either personally or professionally)?

First of all my husband Bob Shanks.  Professionally he is a great supporter of my career, having worked as a photo journalist he helps me with fabulous photos of the properties I market and is understanding of my having to be very flexible regarding my work hours. Personally he is my best friend, we enjoy devotional time almost every morning helping me grow in my faith and he encourages me in my times of needing an extra lift in spirit.

Also, a best friend of mine, Linda Huffman, was the person that helped me begin and build my career in those first difficult years.  I was a single parent at that time and stepping out into self-employment with no regular pay check or health insurance was scary to say the least. She was there for me and taught me how to operate my business, negotiate with skill, listen intently and learn as much as I can from as many other professionals as I could.

I can not forget my sister Arleen.  She is always there for me through thick and thin times. We are best friends forever.

Announcing 2017 Christmas Parade Grand Marshal  and
Unveiling New Signature Event - Grand Marshal Gala

Prescott, AZ (September 13, 2017) - A new Signature Event is being unveiled for the holiday season this November in Prescott. The Prescott Chamber of Commerce is pleased to introduce the Grand Marshal Gala, our newest Signature Event and Prescott tradition which honors the Grand Marshal of the Prescott Chamber Christmas Parade and all of the Chamber sponsors who support the Chamber’s holiday events!

The Prescott Chamber of Commerce and presenting Sponsor, Findlay Auto Group proudly present the 35th Annual Prescott Christmas Parade on December 2, 2017, at 1:00 p.m.! The 2017 theme is “A Cowboy Christmas.”  The Grand Marshal Gala will bring even more excitement to this popular parade. The Prescott Chamber of Commerce is privileged to formally announce that the 2017 Grand Marshal and the very first Grand Marshal Gala Honoree will be Mr. Tommy Meredith on November 30, 2017.

Chamber President, Sheri Heiney, stated that Meredith is well-deserving of this honor! For over a decade, his tireless efforts leading the Friends of Jersey Lilly campaign has raised funds for the Annual Courthouse Lighting.

“This is as big an honor as I could ever expect,” Meredith said. “I am overwhelmed. I have seen a lot of parades and events where others were honored. I never thought it would be me.”

Meredith has been a lifelong Arizona resident, community-minded Prescott business owner, and self-described “drugstore cowboy.”  Meredith credits his wife, Joan, with everything they have together. Since they were married in 1961, he has never slept on the couch in 57 years. They have been partners in all of their business endeavors, and he has never collected a paycheck from anyone else. Meredith’s smile broadens when talking about his family (son, Mark; daughter, Tama; and his three grandchildren).

Meredith grew up in Phoenix, where he attended West High School and was the State High School Wrestling champion in 1956. While attending ASU, he was a member of the first ASU wrestling team in 1956-1957 and was also crowned Campus King in 1959. Meredith served six years in the Air National Guard and was activated to Germany during the Berlin crisis. He retired as a Load Master on a C-97 airplane.

Many jobs, businesses, and accomplishments have shaped Meredith in his lifetime, but the most memorable happened in 1943 (age 9) when Meredith was awarded a YMCA sports tournament trophy. That trophy sits on his bedside table to this day and reminds him that he still can do anything he sets his mind to do. Some of his other notable experiences include: home building with his dad in the 1950’s and 1960’s; riding horseback for 12 hours a day alongside his brother, Mark who roped cattle in Young, AZ; former owner of Jersey Lilly Saloon for 15 years; claimed three of four North American Wild Sheep Grand Slam trophies; participated with Desert Caballeros annual 5-day ride out of Wickenburg; broke a race record driving his Formula V car at Riverside International Raceway Championship with the Sports Car Club of America; was an original founder of the Fiesta Bowl; also an original founder of Arizona Big Horn Sheep Society; and remains an avid antique collector of early American collectibles.

Christmas is Meredith’s favorite holiday. His favorite Christmas memory is when he and his brother received Schwinn Phantom Bicycles. They took off riding on those bicycles right away, and Meredith still isn’t sure if they ever came home that day. For 23 years, the family has attended the Annual Courthouse Lighting. About ten years ago, Meredith approached the Prescott City Council to discuss ideas to increase their funding of the Courthouse Lighting. “After all, we are Arizona’s Christmas City,” said Meredith.  One councilmember, in particular, challenged his comment and said, “Tommy, do something about it.”  So, Meredith walked back to the Jersey Lilly and said, “We’re gonna do this!”  Soon, a committee came together, and they were fundraising. Tommy did the auctioneering for the kick-off party, and light bulbs were sold in the bar. Over the years, money just kept coming in to support the lighting thanks to the efforts of the committee and the people of Prescott.

Since selling the Jersey Lilly Saloon this year, Meredith’s plans are to continue working hard to get out of business. Meredith shared, “Joan and I are going to take care of each other and get our personal affairs in order. There are only so many years in a lifetime, so I want to make the best of them. This isn’t possible with business responsibilities. I want time to enjoy life, just in a different way.”

The First Annual Grand Marshal Gala will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2017, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Make your reservations to the Grand Marshal Gala at Prescott.org. This grand event, honoring Mr. Tommy Meredith, will be held at the Plaza View Ballroom on 120 W. Gurley St., Prescott, AZ 86301.

The 35th Annual Chamber Christmas Parade will be in downtown Prescott on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. Parade applications are available at Prescott.org

The 63rd Annual Christmas Courthouse Lighting will take place on the north side of the Courthouse Plaza on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome!
