BCBS Announces New CEO

BCBSAZ’s expansion of telehealth is an investment in Arizonans’ health
By Pam Kehaly, President and CEO, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona

Good health is a journey. For some, it’s a simple, clear route. For others, it’s a greater struggle. But eventually, we all face inevitable forks in the road and need trusted resources and tools to help guide us. This year, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) has invested in expanding our telehealth offering to further support our mission of improving Arizonans’ quality of life through achievement of optimal health. It provides more choice in where to get care, and it removes obstacles for many who otherwise couldn’t find a way to see the doctor.

Improving Access and Efficiency
Telehealth services like BCBSAZ’s BlueCare Anywhere connect individuals with doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, and counselors via phone, tablet, or computer. This matters, because a big part of navigating the road to good health is addressing issues and concerns without delay. Packed calendars, travel plans, and lack of after-hours appointments at some doctors’ offices can all be barriers to timely care. But not for telehealth. The convenience makes it a popular option—anytime, anywhere. A virtual visit with a clinician can address minor illnesses and give guidance when what to do next is uncertain.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 69 million American workers miss days of work due to illness each year. By improving access and encouraging people to get care sooner rather than putting it off, telehealth can help ensure health issues are identified and treated before they worsen. This reduces employees’ time away from work, which can have a positive impact on their families’ financial health and the related stress.

Plus, if a concern can be resolved by a telehealth physician, it may also prevent an unnecessary trip to urgent care or the hospital (and the related costs). In fact, research from American Well, BCBSAZ’s telehealth partner, shows that telehealth services could save an average of $214 in costs per visit as compared to emergency room, urgent care, or doctor’s office visits.

Addressing Barriers to Care
From addressing provider shortages to improving the healthcare experience and reducing costs, telehealth offers significant advantages. More than 350,000 Arizonans reside in rural areas, where provider shortages are more common. Many families must travel to urban centers to see a doctor. Telehealth creates another option for these individuals so they can get care for a wide range of crucial health needs.

Telehealth also improves access for those needing behavioral health services. A study from Mental Health America ranks Arizona 50th in the United States for access to behavioral health care. Telehealth improves access by making more trained behavioral health professionals available. At the same time, telehealth addresses some of the emotional barriers to getting help by allowing individuals to access care from the privacy of their own homes.

Across the country, medical professionals are finding new ways to use communications technology to bring doctors and patients closer together, faster. At BCBSAZ, we will continue to embrace these innovations by making these services available to our members.

Eligible BCBSAZ employer groups can access BlueCare Anywhere directly at azblue.com/bluecareanywhere.

BBB: Small Business Week Celebration

Better Business Bureau (BBB) celebrated Small Business Week by launching a new website for small businesses at BBB.org/SmallBusiness and offering free programs for business owners and managers. A new survey by BBB found that 84 percent of consumers trust small businesses most. Respondents cited their reasons as: supporting local businesses (60%), convenience (30%), better customer service (27%), and unique items (24%).

Small Business Week (April 29-May 5) honoed the nearly 29 million small businesses in the United States (US) that employ nearly 57 million people…almost half of the private workforce. Although Small Business Week is a US celebration, the new BBB website includes information for businesses across North America and beyond.

BBB is also looking to host free Trust Talks, throughout the rest of the year, regarding groundbreaking research into the “5 Gestures of Trust: Trust and the Customer Service Experience” to help good businesses stand out to customers. The free webinar will require pre-registration, so be on the lookout for email invitations.

Small Business Week also marks the debut of a new e-learning tool for BBB Accredited Business, BBBedu. All business owners and entrepreneurs can sample the first module on how customer reviews impact a business’ reputation with potential customers. To access the free program, go to BBB.org/SmallBusiness and click on “Free Online Course.”

The website links to BBB research on marketplace trust, cybersecurity, and other topics of importance to business owners; BBB standards for business practices and our eight standards of trust; a calendar of events for businesses; and publications, such as TRUSTED magazine and the Better Business podcast series. All available at no cost.

Quad City Chamber Mixer: Prescott Frontier Days

YRMC Health Connect

From humble beginnings in 2013, Yavapai Regional Medical Center’s wellness mascot, Wellby the Yavabear, has become a celebrity around the quad-city area.

“I try not to let it go to my head,” says Wellby, “My only focus is to encourage folks to pursue their personal wellness goals. But if it means that people have started to recognize me on hiking trails and at community events, well, that’s ok with me!”

In all seriousness, Wellby was the brainchild of a group of YRMC employees who wanted to put a friendly face on their mission to keep fellow employees healthy.

“Wellby started as an internal effort here at the hospital,” explains Brian DeVries, YRMC Human Resources Manager for Employee Benefits and Wellness, “But we soon realized that the success we were experiencing at YRMC would be beneficial to our community. The bottom line is that YRMC has a responsibility to keep our community healthy. Wise choices are a win-win for everyone, and this is a fun way to encourage those wise choices.”

Employees at YRMC often take Wellby along hiking, biking, to yoga classes, vacations and anywhere else that features an active, healthy lifestyle. So far, Wellby has traveled to Europe, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, visited Disneyland, and attended the Whiskey Row Marathon and Northern Arizona Suns basketball games, among many other appearances.

Click here to enjoy photos and descriptions of many of Wellby’s adventures on Wellby’s Facebook page. You’ll soon find that the main focus of the page is the promotion of health and wellness here in the quad cities. Features on local destinations, current events, recipes, tips and videos are sure to entertain, inform and keep you on track. Posts from the quad cities’ premier health blog, YRMC HealthConnect are also featured. Community members are encouraged to follow Wellby’s page and post their own wellness stories.

Credit Union West Honors U.S. Veterans and Active Military

Credit Union West Honors U.S. Veterans and Active Military with Reserved Parking Spaces at Credit Union Branches

In a show of respect and support for U.S. veterans and military members, Credit Union West has established reserved parking spaces at six of its Phoenix-area branches for veterans. This initiative will expand to their Prescott, Prescott Valley and Cottonwood branches in May, and to the new Westgate corporate office and retail-banking branch during the first quarter of 2019.

Signs emblazoned with an American flag, reading “Military Veteran Parking,” designate the spaces which are located close to the front of the branch’s doors. The curbs will be painted blue to further distinguish the honorary spaces.

When asked about the military parking, Bob MacGregor, CEO of Credit Union West stated, “We have all benefited from the brave men and women who serve and have served to protect our nation. This is our way of recognizing their commitment, honoring their patriotism, and supporting our 65-year heritage of serving the military community and their families.”

Arizona is home to seven different military bases and is among the top-15 states for veteran populations. In 2016, there were 515,050 U.S. military veterans living in Arizona, comprising an estimated 10 percent of the state’s adult population. The largest number of veterans currently live in Maricopa Count.

“Everyone has neighbors, friends and family who were in the military, or who are currently active. Expressing appreciation helps build a stronger, more cohesive community for all,” said MacGregor. “This is our way of saying, we appreciate all you have done for us and thank you for your service.”

Career Readiness Initiative

The Arizona Career Readiness Credential (ACRC)… Soon-to-be-officially-announced by Governor Ducey… Fully Funded from the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO)… What is it?

“… a career readiness program that equips unemployed Arizona adults with the basic skills that our employers have said they want. The goal is to remove barriers that are keeping these Arizonans on the sidelines and give them a realistic path back to the workforce.”

When employers said they can’t find enough qualified people to fill their open jobs, let alone those they’d like to add, OEO asked them: “EXACTLY what basic skills do you want?” They interviewed hundreds of small and large employers, across the State, in all sectors.

Their findings? This chart summarizes the thousands of Arizona-specific answers to “EXACTLY what basic skills do you want?”

With that need in sight, OEO searched the country, looking for tools with proven success. That’s where WIN Learning and I came in. Because we already had toolsets, proven in other states, that partially address this issue, OEO challenged us to fill in the gaps, to create and implement major improvements to our Career Readiness tools.

I’m happy to report that we succeeded. In fact, other states are already looking to follow Arizona’s lead with this innovative way of preparing and validating our workforce!

As you will see when you visit acrc.az.gov, “ACRC” is actually shorthand for two distinct toolsets. First is instruction via WIN Learning. Second is validation of mastery at different levels as documented by the Arizona Career Readiness Credential. Please visit the website to learn more.

Saving the BEST for last:
  • This program is fully funded for FIVE years.
  • Services will be provided by ARIZONA@WORK, as well as many colleges and not-for-profits.
  • The technology involved has already been stress-tested in Arizona beta locations.
