City of Prescott Earns 2018 Insurify Most Patriotic Cities Award

City of Prescott and the Prescott Chamber of Commerce today announced that it is the recipient of an Insurify Most Patriotic Cities Award. Award winners were determined by a nationwide analysis of the location of current and former military service members.

To determine the most patriotic community in each state, Insurify analyzed over nine hundred thousand auto insurance applications that indicated whether any individual named on the policy was a current or former service member. The resulting data set was analyzed to determine the percentage of residents in each community who identify as current or former military, and the top-ranking city in each state was identified.

Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli, who recently launched a Veterans Affairs Committee, and has several veteran-based initiatives underway in the City, was pleased with this designation.  “We know that Prescott has a higher than average concentration of military veterans,” he said.  “We want to make sure they receive the respect they have earned, and the services that they need, throughout Prescott,” he said.

Prescott Chamber of Commerce President Sheri Heiney agrees.    “Prescott is very proud of its Military community and this recognition,” she said.    “Starting in late 2017 the Prescott Chamber of Commerce partnered with Red, White & Blue and the American Legion to create networking events and recognize Veteran Owned Business Mixers among other events such as the Heroes Night event.”

“Military service is a tradition that represents the best of America” said Snejina Zacharia, CEO of Insurify. “These awards recognize the communities in each state whose residents have contributed the most to our nation's armed services.”

First WATCHMAN Procedure at YRMC’s James Family Heart Center

The James Family Heart Center at Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) has reached another significant medical milestone with the introduction of the left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) procedure, better known as the “WATCHMAN.”

“The launch of this new service is another excellent example of why the community can be proud to have this state-of-the-art Heart Center right here at home,” said Pierre Tibi, MD, Medical Director of The James Family Heart Center at YRMC.

The WATCHMAN is performed in YRMC’s hybrid operating suite – regarded as among the finest in the nation – by either Soundos K. Moualla, MD, YRMC Structural and Interventional Cardiologist, or Nisha Tung-Takher, MD, YRMC Cardiac Electrophysiologist.

Who is eligible for the WATCHMAN? The procedure is designed for people with Afib (atrial fibrillation) that’s not related to a heart valve problem as well as people who don’t respond well to blood thinners. Afib affects the heart’s ability to pump blood normally. It can cause blood to pool in the left atrial appendage and form a clot. A permanent heart implant, the WATCHMAN, reduces the risk of blood clots originating in the left atrial appendage.

“These blood clots can escape from the left atrial appendage, enter the bloodstream and cause a stroke,” said Gwen Rhodes, RN, YRMC Patient Navigator. “Many stroke-causing clots that come from the heart are formed in the left atrial appendage. That’s why closing off this part of the heart is recommended for some people as a way to reduce their risk of stroke.”

Specially trained physicians like Drs. Moualla and Tung-Takher use computer guidance to implant the WATCHMAN device, which is about the size of a quarter. After making a small incision in the upper leg, these physicians insert a narrow tube, similar to a standard stent procedure, and guide the WATCHMAN into the left atrial appendage. The WATCHMAN device closes off that part of the heart to stop blood clots from escaping.

For more information about the WATCHMAN and other YRMC James Family Heart Center services, visit YRMC HealthConnect at yrmchealthconnect.org and YRMC’s website at yrmc.org. Connect with YRMC on social media at:

City of Prescott Trails reach Century mark in miles

PRESCOTT, AZ (June 4, 2018) – The City of Prescott has achieved a milestone in its trail network.  As of June 1, City of Prescott trails have reached 100 miles in total length.  This has been achieved through continuous trail building, and the efforts of staff and dozens of volunteers.

City Recreation Services staff, GIS the Community Restitution program and the Volunteer Ranger programs have and continue to add tremendously to the day to day upkeep of these 100 miles and 2400 acres of Natural Parkland.

City trail visits continue to increase, with over 800,000 annually.  Some examples of annual total visits include:  Peavine Trail, over 75,000,   Constellation Trail, over 48,000,  Greenways Trails, over 140,000 .

Prescott Trails/Natural Parklands Coordinator Chris Hosking said there’s more to come.  “We have another 60 + miles planned in the city, and many more with our partnership with the Prescott National Forest.”

Hosking said this couldn’t have been achieved without the help of volunteers.  “In 2007,  I had half a dozen guys who worked with the Forest Service Over the Hill Gang who wanted to help me with the Willow Dells Trails.  Since then we have gone from strength to strength with probably 200 OTHG members on the email list, with about 60 active in trail building. We currently get about 9000 hours of volunteer time from the OTHG annually.”

Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli said this is a significant milestone.   “One of the center pieces to Prescott’s outdoor amenities is our trails.  Improving and expanding this trail system is a never-ending endeavor for the city’s Recreation Services Department.  We applaud their efforts, along with our volunteer friends from the Over The Hill Gang.”

More information about all City trails can be found at PrescottTrails.com.  Or call Recreation Services at 928-777-1121.
