YRMC’s Your Healthy Kitchen with Dr. Michael Macon, Medical Director of The Breast Care Center at YRMC
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Arizona, and Yavapai County has the third highest rate of breast cancer among all counties in the state. While we have no control over some of the risks for breast cancer, including family history and genetics, maintaining a healthy weight, enjoying a plant-based diet, being physically active, and scheduling regular mammograms are all steps that women can take to both prevent and detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. Dr. Michael Macon, Medical Director of the Breast Care Center at YRMC joined us recently on the set of YRMC’s Your Healthy Kitchen to share news about the excellent diagnostic tools, cutting edge treatment plans, caring staff and patient support available at the Breast Care Center. He also helped us prepare a delicious roasted cauliflower soup filled with cancer-fighting nutrients and lots of warm, satisfying flavor!
Click here to view the video: https://youtu.be/jCgzAtcbCsk
There’s no doubt that lifestyle changes help reduce the risk of breast cancer, but remember, getting regular mammograms is equally important, whether you are at increased risk of breast cancer because of family or personal history or not.
Call now, 928-442-8900, to schedule your mammogram, and remind your friends and loved ones to do the same. The Breast Care Center is located at Yavapai Regional Medical Center East, 7700 Florentine Road, in Prescott Valley.
ASU Bachelor's Degree at Yavapai College
ASU@Yavapai: A partnership for student success
Arizona State University and Yavapai College have partnered together to offer bachelor degree programs in Yavapai County, beginning in 2019. Students can pursue an associate degree at Yavapai College and upon completion, transfer to the university and attend ASU classes available at two Yavapai College campuses.
Three bachelor degree programs
ASU, Yavapai College and Yavapai County community leaders identified three popular ASU degree programs that will provide students with knowledge and skills needed for career opportunities in the Yavapai community.
- Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Health Sciences
- Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Organizational Leadership
- Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Applied Leadership
The programs will help address Yavapai County’s workforce development needs — the degree in Health Sciences will help fill employment opportunities in the ever-growing and popular healthcare fields. The Applied Leadership and Organizational Leadership programs will prepare students to be leaders in business, government and nonprofit organizations.
Students will take lower-division courses through Yavapai College, then transfer to ASU. The university courses will be taught by ASU faculty, some of whom may be community college faculty as well as professionals in Yavapai County who are qualified to teach university-level courses.
For more information please visit admission.asu.edu/transfer/asuyavapai. Students who are interested in these programs are encouraged to contact an ASU representative who can help them with the transfer process.
BBB - Travel & Vacation Tips
Better Business Bureau
Scammers commonly target people looking for great deals online by offering tempting vacation packages at unrealistically low prices, which is why it’s important to research first. BBB.org is a great resource for finding travel agencies, agents and third-party travel sites that are reputable and dependable.
Here are some additional tips from BBB to help ensure a worry-free vacation:
- Plan ahead. The early bird gets the worm. Allow time to research hotels, flights and the area where you will be staying. Typically, the earlier you make reservations, the better the deal and less risk of your favorite destination being booked solid.
- Be alert for travel scams. Watch out for phone calls or letters claiming “win a trip” or websites offering prices too good to be true. Avoid clickbait ads for cheap vacations found on the Internet as these may lead to fake websites trying to steal personal information.
- Vacation rental scams. Scammers copy listings of owner accommodations found online through sites such as Homeaway or Flipkey. They take pictures, descriptions and addresses of real units/homes, for rent, and then repost the information on sites like Craigslist at rock bottom prices. Phony landlords will require an advance deposit, then avoid contact with renters who may be left with nothing but a meaningless reservation or a rental that looks nothing like the photos.
- Get trip details in writing. Details should include confirmation, total cost, restrictions and any airline and hotel names. Also, review and keep a copy of cancellation and refund policies, as well as the cancellation policies of the specific travel agency or booking site used.
- Pay with a credit card. Paying with a credit card provides additional protection if something goes wrong with any reservation.
No matter where or when one travels, taking these steps will help to protect and avoid a possible break-in:
- Wait to post on social media. We all like to share our vacation adventures with family and friends, but wait until the trip is over before posting. Giving too much detail about being away could potentially attract thieves.
- Check home insurance policies. Unattended homes damaged while away, may not be covered under the insurance policy. Some policies do not cover damage if nobody checks on the home for a certain amount of time. Be aware of policy regulations and travel worry-free.
- Take a map. People rely heavily on smartphones and GPS. Be prepared and take a hard copy backup map to use when poor cell reception is encountered or in case of technical difficulties.
- Be smart and use the hotel safe. Most hotels provide safes where one can safely store extra cash and keep any valuables under lock
Pet of the Month
Yavapai Humane Society
Roadster is a 6-year-old Terrier, Staffordshire Bull/Mix and he is a sweetie. Roadster enjoys long walks and exploring outside. He is very curious and would make for an excellent hiking/adventuring companion. Roadster is best suited as the sole dog in the house and would prefer to be away from children. He is a kind little guy and is very attentive to corrections and thrives in new environments as well as with new challenges. He wants to see what all the world has to offer and is just waiting for his soul-human to be by his side for forever. Roadster is fun, gentle, sweet, loyal, strong and loving- he adores being called a ‘good boy’ and he raises to excitement when a treat is near.
A Note from Roadster: “I need my soul-human to be confident and consistent when disciplining and training me because it helps me understand what is expected of me, so I will know what actions will lead to me being called a ‘good boy’. I can’t wait to explore with my soul-human, it will be so fun and exciting, and we will be really happy!”
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona: Reducing Opioid Deaths Through Harm Reduction
Haley Coles, Sonoran Prevention Works
The overdose crisis has earned its designation as an epidemic. Opioid overdose has killed 949 Arizonans in 2017—more than double the 454 lives it took a mere five years prior. And opioids are changing even more lives than they take. Cases of hepatitis C and HIV have skyrocketed alongside opioid use, particularly in rural areas of the state. But no community is immune. Every county in Arizona has been affected, and it’s going to take a statewide effort to solve the opioid problem.
Harm Reduction in Action
As the 2018 Arizona Opioid Epidemic Act takes aim at the overdose crisis through prescription and dosage limits, Sonoran Prevention Works focuses on overdose prevention and harm reduction with people who use opioids.
Why harm reduction? According to national data, less than 5 percent of individuals with substance use disorder think they need treatment. Understanding that until a person is ready for treatment, they are at risk for death, disease, and high costs to public systems, it is imperative that we take a harm reduction approach to improve health outcomes, while increasing the chances of future success.
To meet that need, one of the greatest areas of opportunity Sonoran Prevention Works sees is tackling the perpetuation of stigma that surrounds opioid use, so that we can end the health disparities faced by those made vulnerable by drug use.
Sonoran Prevention Works also provides community workshops and trainings on overdose recognition and response, hepatitis C, naloxone use, needle-stick prevention, and more in an effort to educate people who use opioids, their families, and community service providers. We also offer naloxone to people who are at risk for overdose as well as family members and health providers.
In January 2017, SPW began its statewide Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution program. Since then, we’ve:
• Held over 1500 overdose prevention events in all 15 counties and on 12 tribal lands
• Distributed over 190,000 doses of naloxone
Impressively, we received reports of 6,383 lives saved as a result of the naloxone we distributed – 99% of those rescues were performed by people who use drugs.
Our Mobilize AZ Grant
Sonoran Prevention Works depends heavily on close relationships with other entities to conduct this level of outreach, including Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation, Shot In The Dark, Community Medical Services, and AHCCCS.
In 2018, Sonoran Prevention Works was fortunate to receive a $137,763 expansion grant from Mobilize AZ. Through the Mobilize AZ initiative, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona is investing $10 million over three years to turn the tide against opioid misuse. The grant will allow us to support and expand outreach in Phoenix, Tucson, Kingman, Flagstaff, Holbrook, Prescott, Payson, Globe, Yuma, Sierra Vista, and on the Navajo Nation. It will also allow us to expand our statewide harm-reduction efforts, including:
- Distributing naloxone and fentanyl test strips
- Dispensing health and hygiene supplies
- Providing rapid HIV and hepatitis C testing
- Offering emergency housing vouchers
- Providing transportation to social and medical appointments
- Delivering individualized and group educational sessions in the community and in jails on substance use disorder, overdose prevention, and treatment
- Providing support to pregnant women who use drugs
Staff will be able to act as full-time advocates for people struggling with substance use and will engage with them on levels that individuals feel comfortable with, from distribution of wound care supplies and fentanyl test strips, to a conversation about HIV and hepatitis risk factors, to multi-month case planning to address coping skills, housing, and recovery.
By focusing on harm reduction, we can have a significant effect on our state and the overdose epidemic. We’re grateful for organizations like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona that can see the big picture. When we work together, there’s no telling how great our impact can be.

Dear Valued Community Member & Business Owner,
On behalf of the Prescott High School administration we, the student rewards and motivation committee of Prescott High School, would like to ask that you please participate in helping us provide our students with initiative and compensation outside of what we are able to offer them at PHS.
As a local public high school, we are well aware and so grateful for all you do as vital community members to ensure the success of our students most of whom you know as their mom, dad, aunt, uncle, brother, sister, cousin, or lifelong family friend.
We are asking, in addition to the incredibly valuable role you currently play in the lives of our students, that you also please consider offering our students who earn a 3.0 GPA, have 2 or fewer absences and have had excellent behavior each quarter, a 15% discount with your business.
In order to claim the discount, these hardworking and dedicated students will be given the “Honorable Badger” sticker to be placed on their student ID cards as proof of their success each quarter. Students would then show you their ID and dated sticker to receive a 15% discount at your business.
For your commitment to our outstanding students, all participating businesses will be listed on the Prescott High School website on a web page specifically dedicated to the Honorable Badger Program. The program will also be promoted and announced to the public through our media relations coordinator.
We thank you for your consideration to participate in this program that seeks to reward the best and brightest students in our community as we strive to continue ‘Pursuing Higher Standards’.
For further details, questions, or comments please contact Matt Dean at Prescott High School at (928) 445 2322 ext. 72193 or matt.dean@prescottschools.com

The above is an example of what the discount sticker would look like. If the student earned a discount sticker for the next quarter it would go over the top of this one and would have new valid dates. If they did not, then this one would expire. Stickers will be controlled and distributed through the administration at PHS.
