About Us
“Are there sharks in this ocean?” asked a 6th grader from Reno, Nevada as he gazed on Lake Tahoe for the first time. This question prompted the creation of Sierra Nevada Journeys in 2006 as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire youth and communities to take care of the natural world through education, leadership development and service.
Sierra Nevada Journeys is the leading provider of experiential education in the greater Reno/Lake Tahoe area, serving both students and teachers in Nevada and California. We carry out our mission through in-school lessons, after-school programs, field-based experiences, residential outdoor school, and summer camps. Each program focuses on hands-on, inquiry-based education. We sustain those student learning experiences through professional development opportunities for educators. Sierra Nevada Journeys works with more than 6,000 students and 1,000 teachers each year.
Sierra Nevada Journeys’ unique educational model actively engages students and teachers through hands-on learning with a focus on education, leadership development, and service. Sierra Nevada Journeys enhances current classroom education by taking a “multiple points of contact” approach with schools, offering school and field-based programs, residential experiences, and professional development opportunities for educators. This model has a greater impact on students by deepening their learning over time as they build a knowledge base hone critical thinking skills. All academic curricula are correlated to the California and Nevada State educational standards and to nationally recognized guidelines for excellence from the North American Association for Environmental Education.
