New Rockaway Beach Hostel Attracts Guests from Afar (08/18/10)
In the four years since they opened their six-room motel on the north end of town, the Taylors said they had met plenty of people who were simply looking for a “place to rest my head.” So in December 2009, the couple bought the adjacent lot and building to convert into a hostel, which now includes both private and shared rooms, with shared bathrooms and living space. Doing so has drawn an international crowd. “We've had the best hostel guests I've ever seen,” Maureen said. “One night recently, we had girls from Sweden and a couple from The Netherlands; a German father, daughter and her friend; and another couple from British Columbia. We felt pretty international that night.”
The hostel sparkles with fresh paint, ceramic tile, and new furniture and appliances. It features the option of private rooms with one full bed, the ladies bunk/family room for up to three people, or the main bunk/mixed dorm room, which consists of six twin beds set up as bunks. Guests share two common bathrooms, as well as a roomy lounge space and a kitchen fully equipped for cooking meals. A TV and a DVD player are available in the common space and in each room. The Taylors offer a collection of DVDs to borrow for free. There is also a computer station with wireless access. And the kitchen is stocked with staples such as coffee, tea, creamers, peanut butter and jelly.
Eco-friendliness is emphasized at the hostel – the space is stocked with reusable towels and environmentally friendly soaps and cleaners. While hostel guests do have the option of a private room, the bunk area upstairs is a true hostelling experience, with six bunk beds, a curtained-off changing area and individual lockers for the storage of personal items. The bunk room space can be shared with up to six strangers.
The Taylors said they’ve tried to make it comfortable, including a reading light at each bunk, an air purifier for the room and coming soon, the addition of an individual shelf at each bunk. “This room gets used a lot when the state parks are full and people who planned to camp couldn't find a campsite,” Maureen said. “Last week, we had a mother traveling with her daughter. This poor mom, she said they were looking for a campsite for two hours. She saw the hostel as she was driving by and we made it a private room for her and her daughter.”
The price for a hostel stay ranges from $24 a night for a bed in the bunk room to $49 for two guests in an individual room. Guests must be at least 14 years old to stay in the hostel and younger guests must be accompanied by an adult. The Taylors prefer a minimum age of 18 for guests staying in the main bunk room, although they are willing to make exceptions, depending on the situation.
The Taylors said they’re also happy to discuss the possibility of renting the entire space for groups or family reunions. They already have plans to add a third phase to the project, by expanding the hostel building to add more rooms and to build more of an outdoor deck area. They also hope someday to put in an outdoor fire pit and water feature.
“We really do enjoy meeting people. It's been fascinating,” Maureen said. “We love standing at the fire with them, especially the kids.” For more information, call the Sea Haven Motel office at 503-355-8101, or go online to seahavenmotel.net.

About Us
Sea Haven's Guest House
530 Hwy 101 N., Rockaway Beach, OR
503-355-8101 office / 503-812-6433 cell
The opening statement of many traveler's we meet is: "I just need a place to lay my head". They are looking to keep their lodging expenses down as they explore Oregon's beautiful coastline. To help fill this need, Sea Haven Motel aquired the six bedroom home next door and added Sea Haven's "Guest House" (also known as “European” style lodging).
In the home there are six private bedrooms rooms that can be rented as an alternative to renting a more expensive motel room. These bedrooms share the common space of the home, such as kitchen, baths and living room. Besides a bed, each bedroom has a lockable door, it's own TV and DVD player, a small desk and chair and storage space.
There is fresh paint, Pergo style living and bedroom floors, ceramic tile in kitchen and bath areas, updated furniture and new appliances. It is a beautiful home environment in which to relax after a day of traveling.
Besides operating the Guest House as a Bed & Breakfast style lodging (without the breakfast!) it can also be rented for private functions, such as group or family events (the whole house sleeps 17 with no one on a living room sofa).
Most private bedrooms are set up with one queen bed, accomodating a single traveler or a couple. There is an option for a loft twin bed in one bedroom, for two people traveling together who do not want to share a bed. For a larger group, there is a family "bunk room", with two twin bunk beds and a full size futon that sleeps up to six.
Sharing a Guest House is not for everybody. As one traveler recently said "to stay....you are trading some of your traveling amenities for a lower rate and actual interaction with fellow travelers. It means sitting in the lounge playing Scrabble with other guests. It means a late night invitation to a bonfire. It means a shared pot of coffee."
Since opening, several guests have told us that this is the best place that they have seen! Below, we have posted excerpts from recent guest book comments, email notes, and Travel Site reviews.

We were traveling to the coast on business & affordability was a priority... Excellent room, comfortable shared living area equipt with fresh brewed coffee, computer with wifi, huge screen TV, donuts & daily paper delivered by the friendly host in the morning, fresh flowers and the conversation with the other considerate "housemates" was priceless! Amazing place! Thank you, Peace of Soap Company
A warm, wonderful place to stay!

We stumbled across Sea Haven while we were traveling down the Oregon Coast, not expecting to find anything worthwhile or affordable....They did have a room and it turned out to be fantastic. Everything is newly furnished and finished; there is a big lounge area with couches, games, big screen TV, DVD’s, a dining table and a terrific kitchen facility. The rooms were super clean and sharing a bathroom wasn't an issue at all, especially considering how affordable the room was...Thanks to Maureen and her husband for making our stay so easy and so pleasant!
They Even Had The Goonies!

….This is the best-kept secret on the OR coast...but not for long. The price was right. So comfortable I felt like I was sitting in my living room at home….I was so comfy there that my plans to just sleep there and leave early turned into lounging one morning with a cup of coffee, internet, and a the movie. You won't be disappointed!
This is not a hostel, this is home!

This was a very pleasant surprise. The place was immaculate, cozy, comfortable and we slept like a baby. Jeff and Maureen have made this place a wonderful haven. I don't think there was one thing left that wasn't thought of for everyone's comfort. It was like a home away from home.
