Solar Energy Systems Cut Costs for Apartment Buildings (03/12/11)
Tucson, AZ –
Tucson apartment building owners stabilize utility costs with rooftop solar electric and water heating array.
Trailblazing Tucson apartment building owner, David Bakke, is embracing low carbon technologies that reduce operating costs and attract conservation-minded tenants. Bakke recently installed a new solar water heating system on his north central Catalina View apartment building that provides domestic hot water to the tenants of all thrity-one units therein. “It just makes sense,” says Bakke, “The money I save in unused natural gas will pay for the solar water heating system ten times over in the next fifteen years.”
The system itself, eight 4’X10’ solar thermal panels mounted in series with two ultra-high efficiency natural gas boilers as backup, was designed by the colaborative efforts of engineers from three companies. “The biggest challenge we faced,” says Roger Vesper, electrical engineer for Solar Plus, the local company that installed the system, “was that no one to our knowledge had ever done this before in Tucson.” Plumbing engineer, Al Nichols, agrees. “I’ve had several solar companies approach me with similar ideas,” says Nichols, “but Solar Plus is the first to take it to the finish line.”
