Plumbing Basics training at Orcas Island High School

San Juan County Economic Development Council (EDC)

The San Juan County Economic Development Council (EDC) will offer free training in plumbing basics this January, sponsored by Walt Corbin, the Orcas Island Community Foundation, and the Orcas Island Kiwanis Club.
The course will be taught at Orcas Island High School by Jeff Morris of Morris Plumbing and by Orcas Island High School Vocational and Woodworking instructor Brett McFarland. The program is intended to benefit participating students as well as local plumbing companies in need of skilled employees. The hands-on curriculum has been designed for students and career changers, and will include a history of plumbing, career information, tool usage, standard plumbing code, safety, and more. This course is free to residents of San Juan County, but space is limited and requires both registration and a filing fee of $10.
The course will run from 5:30-7:30pm Mondays and Wednesdays from January 28th though March 20th of 2019. There is no cost for the training; pre-registration and a $10 filing fee is required. The deadline to apply is Monday, January 21st.
To apply, please visit the EDC’s website at www.sanjuansedc.org/trades. For more information call the EDC office at 360-378-2906 or email EDC Trades Coordinator at glenn@sanjuansedc.org.
This program is sponsored by Walt Corbin, the Orcas Island Community Foundation, the Kiwanis Club of Orcas Island, Orcas Island School District, and by Jeff Morris Plumbing & Heating. The EDC’s Trades Education Initiative is additionally supported by San Juan County, the Town of Friday Harbor, the Port of Friday Harbor, San Juan Island School District, Heritage Bank, and Islanders Bank.

Knowledge Worker Network

San Juan County EDC

Projects often involve combinations of these types of jobs (e.g., coding and design, or data analysis and writing). A knowledge worker network could promote economic development by helping locals to find off-island clients, bringing more revenue and higher incomes to the islands. In addition, it would help local businesses find local talent more easily. The EDC invites knowledge workers and those who work with them to attend an informal meetup on January 16th from 2:00 until 3:00 PM. at the Orcas Island Library and a second meeting on February 6th at the San Juan Island library at 2:30 to 3:30 PM. These are follow-ups to the EDC’s well-attended meetup on San Juan Island on October 24th.  In addition, the EDC has started an online group for San Juan County knowledge workers and other interested people. More information is available on the EDC website at www.sanjuansedc.org/kwn. If you would like to join, contact us at mickey@sanjuansedc.org
