Best of the Fest

FHFF

January 15th- Given directed by Jess Bianchi; Audience Choice Award for Best Family Friendly Documentary at the 2017 Maui Film Festival. Given is the simple yet powerful story of a unique family legacy that has come full circle. Told through the visceral experience of a six-year-old, the film follows legendary surfers Aamion and Daize Goodwin from their island home of Kauai through 15 different countries in the quest for big-time surf, fulfilling a calling handed down through generations. Set in wave after wave of stunningly visual earthscapes, Given blooms into a tender yet stirring exploration of a young boy's understanding of life through his familial bonds that include an exceptional reverence for nature. This deeply moving film contrasts the child's small voice with the big world he travels through in order to find his way home again. A quest into positive film making, Given shows the wisdom that comes from the eyes of a child under the guidance of a loved one - the passing of knowledge from father to son. Released in 2016; running time 74 minutes.
Admission is by donation; Film Society Members are free. The Friday Harbor Film Festival has selected the top rated films of the 2018 Film Festival to screen at the Grange for the Best of the Fest 2019 Series.

EDC Knowledge Worker Network

The EDC is working to create a knowledge worker network for islanders who work with code, data, graphics or words. Knowledge worker jobs include computer programming, editing, web design, engineering/scientific consulting, and others that primarily involve creating, manipulating, or analyzing information. Projects often involve combinations of these types of jobs (e.g., coding and design, or data analysis and writing). A knowledge worker network could promote economic development by helping locals to find off-island clients, bringing more revenue and higher incomes to the islands. In addition, it would help local businesses find local talent more easily. The EDC invites knowledge workers and those who work with them to attend an informal meetup on January 16th from 2:00 until 3:00 PM. at the Orcas Island Library and a second meeting on February 6th at the San Juan Island library at 2:30 to 3:30 PM. These are follow-ups to the EDC’s well-attended meetup on San Juan Island on October 24th.  In addition, the EDC has started an online group for San Juan County knowledge workers and other interested people. More information is available on the EDC website at www.sanjuansedc.org/kwn. If you would like to join, contact us at mickey@sanjuansedc.org.

Community Foundation Awards Grants

The San Juan Island Community Foundation recently awarded grants totaling $20,546 to local nonprofits in their third and final grant cycle of the year. The Foundation awarded $4,648 from its Healthy Community Fund, while generous donors and the SJICF Women’s Fund contributed a combined $15,898. The following local projects were funded: The San Juan County Economic Development Council was awarded $2,348 to launch their Construction Basics Training program on San Juan Island.
Island Stage Left was awarded $3,150 to replace the flooring of their stage.
Islands Oil Spill Association (IOSA) was awarded $3,590 to purchase safety equipment and boom trailers.
PADs for Parkinson’s was awarded $4,858 to cover costs for their annual community newsletter.
The San Juan Island Family Resource Center was awarded $5,000 to support a technology upgrade for improved outreach.
Leadership San Juan Islands was awarded $1,600 for Class of 2019 tuition assistance.
In an effort to increase nonprofit collaboration and provide training, the Foundation staff recently hosted the first of a series of networking sessions for nonprofit leaders. Held at the Grange Hall in Friday Harbor in November, nonprofit directors and development staff enjoyed an update from the SJICF staff and engaged in lively conversations over lunch to discuss current projects and to share ideas for specific topics like board development, fundraising and partnering with other nonprofits for events and programs.
Carrie Unpingco, Executive Director of SJICF said at the event, “With our added staff, we’re excited to provide more resources to nonprofits in the coming year. In addition to grant funding, we hope these opportunities to meet regularly with peers will help strengthen nonprofit leaders and make their work a bit easier. Sometimes just talking to others that share your day to day challenges can make a big difference.”
Future sessions are planned for 2019, with the next one on February 28th.
The Foundation’s next grant cycle is coming up right after year end. If you're a nonprofit planning to submit a grant application, call the Foundation at (360) 378-1001 to schedule a pre-application meeting between 12/10 and 12/21. The deadline for submission is January 7, 2019. For more than 24 years, the San Juan Island Community Foundation’s mission has been to connect donors who want to make a difference to nonprofits meeting the needs of the San Juan Island community.
