About Us

About Us
Welcome to UCP of Washington & Northern VA, serving adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities since 1949. Our mission is to advance the independence, productivity and quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families. UCP accomplishes this mission in the delivery of services that are both unique in the community and considered "best practice" in the field of human services.

As a matter of historical perspective, United Cerebral Palsy of Washington and Northern Virginia has operated a Medicaid Adult Day Treatment Program for individuals with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities for more than fifty(50) years.

This program, while always of high quality, followed a custodial care model of service during most of that time. In March of 1998, the model took on a new form of support rather than service - for the 125 individuals enrolled. This new direction of service focused on the individual - not the group. The goals shifted to discovering the interests and wants of each consumer and to optimizing their opportunities to participate in their community. The essence of the change emphasized experience, and the community became the classroom.

With the community viewed as a daily destination, the challenges that remained were transportation, access and scheduling. Here the staff demonstrated outstanding organizational skills, creative planning and cooperation. The leasing of mini-vans allowed for a flexible transportation system with a small number of consumers able to head in separate directions accurate to their chosen interests. They facilitated, through complex scheduling process, more than 4,000 individual trips into the community.

UCP applauds the efforts of a wonderful and dedicated staff who are architects of Experiences Unlimited and who employed contemporary thinking and technology while investing hearts and minds in the future of those they support. The net effect of their collective effort has not only fostered the growth of consumers, but has restructured United Cerebral Palsy.

On April 20, 2001, UCP responded to the call to provide support to an additional 102 individuals considered to be the most vulnerable and challenged in the District. Securing a Medicaid rate; finding and developing a new location; hiring and training new staff and ultimately implementing 102 individual plans took the better part of a year.
Today our goal is to achieve a level of excellence worthy of every individual who has chosen our care.

We believe we are up to the challenge.
