Vice President's Corner

Lance Wilson

As a business owner in our wonderful communities of Spanish Fork and Salem I have been approached in the last few weeks by several fellow business owners as well as residents concerning the proposed Spanish Fork Life Center www.spanishfork.org/lifecenter

This has been a hot topic for many in our community and I feel it important to share with each of you fellow chamber members my thoughts on this issue.

Executive Director Message

Clark H. Caras

To say that things have and are busy for the Chamber in the Summer of 2015 is most definitely an understatement and in no way even begins to reflect what has got wheels turning and churning in the basement of the Spanish Fork City building where our offices are located.
From 101 businesses handing out Play Unplugged Brag Tags to an average of three new business ribbon cuttings a week, Fiesta Days, Salem Days, businesses wanting to upgrade memberships to benefit the community, the arrival and deposit of a check for $25,000 from State Farm because 99,000 people here at home and across the United States were voting for Spanish Fork and the PUP program during a 30 day period, the raising of the Revere Health superstructure in Salem, the possible up or down vote of a Life Center in Spanish Fork, the awarding to 24 Nebo District high school graduates of $1,500 scholarships each because of the success of May's golf tournament held in partnership with the Rotary Club, sharing cotton candy from the Chamber at the Treasure of the Trails opening, involvement in the Champion's Challenge rodeo as a successful recruiting tool, support of the local 4-H and FFA with the Utah State Junior Livestock Show, and a Utah's Own Farmers Market that has 30 registered vendors for the summer -- with that number growing each week as word spreads about near sellouts of produce and product -- and sees shopping patrons needing to park up to two blocks away at times, and participation in a "gratis" $250,000 study of our historic Main Street by a national organization...yes, things are hot in the old town tonight; and almost every day!

Congratulations to Dr. Aaron Cloward, August's Business of the Month winner!! The dental clinic is owned and operated by Dr. Aaron Cloward, DMD, who was raised in Spanish Fork and presently lives in Salem, where he is a member of the city council and as such serves on the Chamber’s Board of Directors and represents the chamber to Salem City and its council.

Former Ute Colt Sampson Encourages Kids To Get Out & Play

Tim Letcher

In today's world, it seems that nearly everyone is plugged in to some type of digital device at all times. This is especially true of today's younger generation.

While technology serves us well in many cases, it has also made the youth of today much less physically active than youth of a previous generation.

And that's where former Utah tight end Colt Sampson and the Play Unplugged program come in. Sampson is one of the sponsors of the program in Spanish Fork, Utah, and he sees real value in Play Unplugged.

"I think it's something the community can do each year," Sampson says. "It encourages the kids to get away from video games, from sitting around all day and it rewards them for being active and also, it brings the whole community together."

Here’s how the program works. At the end of the school year, local children are given lanyards for the Play Unplugged program, along with a handout on how the program works. Over the summer, kids are given 101 tasks to choose from, and when they complete each particular task, they go into a local business to pick up their brag badge, which goes on the lanyard. The program is free to all children in the community.

Revere Health Groundbreaking in Salem

Revere Health holds an official beam signing, ground breaking, and tree planting at its new 89,000 sq ft (still under construction) in Salem, Utah just one mile east of the Benjamin I-15 interchange.
Mayor Randy Brailsford of Salem, Councilman Mike Mendenhall of Spanish Fork, and Mayor Rick Moore of Payson were all on hand to welcome the largest commercial development in Salem's history. Councilman Aaron Cloward of Salem also joined the group that included Revere CEO Scott Barlow, who happens to be a 17 year long resident of Salem.
Barlow estimates when completed the multi-million dollar facility will see 150,000 patient visits a year.
The Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce was there that day to proudly welcome the former Central Utah Clinic to the community along the historic Arrowhead Trail.

Humanitarian Work in the Dominican Republic

Lance Wilson

"Melanie and I participated in a week long humanitarian service project to the Dominican Republic with a group called the Dominican Starfish Foundation (www.dominicanstarfish.org) in cooperation with PAL Humanitarian.  We donated money and helped raise funds prior to our departure which were used upon our arrival to help the foundation construct new homes for less fortunate families whose homes were either condemned or left homeless due to fire or other disasters.

Our group of 20 raised the funds and participated in the construction of the foundation’s 25th home and began the demolition of their 26th home.  These families were living in extreme circumstances of poverty and hunger.  They were identified by the foundation as candidates for new homes and we were able to work with the families, local workers and other volunteers in several areas of the construction process.  The work was very tiring and strenuous but super fulfilling and gratifying.  We were also able to collect donated clothing, hats, shoes sunglasses and medicine which we used to distribute to a refugee camp of Haitian & Dominican refugees whose 64 homes were destroyed by a large fire in June in a shantytown where a late night fire spread from house to house causing widespread damage to this very poor neighborhood.  These individuals were without homes, beds, clothing, shoes and food.  Our group of 20 were able to distribute food items, clothing, shoes and vitamins to over 200 individuals.  Our group also visited and donated items to a school, pediatric hospital and a nursing home. "

Welcome to Mathnasium of Spanish Fork!

Congratulations to Mathnasium of Spanish Fork! Dr. James K. Moore says, “We’re excited about this opportunity to introduce ourselves to the Spanish Fork, Springville, Mapleton, Salem and Payson communities and demonstrate to area residents how Mathnasium forges a positive attitude toward math among kids. We’ve had enormous success in boosting students’ math skills, their understanding of mathematical concepts, and their self-esteem. Math can be intimidating to both students and parents, so we hope the open house will show how the Mathnasium Method makes it interesting and fun."

The great people at Mathnasium gave away a few certificates for a free month of tutoring, as well as gave all the attendees a math quiz! Thank you to Mathnasium for providing lunch, and to Costco for the cake, as well as SF17 for filming!
