President's Corner

Stacy Beck

I can't believe the year is wrapping up!  What a ride it has been serving as your Chamber President.  So many changes happened.  So many ribbon cuttings. And so many new friends.  The growth our chamber has experienced has been wonderful.  The support from our members is fabulous.  We are all blessed to live in a community where traditions abound and success is created. I have appreciated your support. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season, and a very happy and prosperous new year.

Executive Director Message

Clark H. Caras

Hopefully you are all too busy to read this last message of the year!
Not that won’t be action packed and give the Stars Wars plot away, but that you are all too busy doing commerce in order to look at and read it.  Because in reality that is what my message is to you…Volumes of business, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Being Clark though, and of Greek descent I can’t get away without a bit of a message, which boils down to a great big thank you to all of you for being part of my reunion of coming home to Spanish Fork and Salem.  It’s not a lot of people who get to say they have had a party and welcome home lasting for a year, but that’s exactly how it feels.
We live in such an amazing place, filled with businessmen and women and citizens to go along with it.  And thanks to a good government in each of our organized communities, Spanish Fork and Salem, we have many more businesses springing up all of the time.  And as I drive through Benjamin, Lake Shore, Leland and Palmyra, as the son of a famer it is sad to see acreage being lost to the building of homes; yet most of those homes are going up to surround the sons of daughters of these communities who want to come home.

December's Business of the Month

Clark H. Caras

Congratulations to J-Mart Publishing!
You cannot think of one without thinking of the other; that is historic Spanish Fork Main Street and J-Mart Publishing Company, which came into being in 1962 when J.C. Henderson and his wife, Maureen, bought a small printing business and a web press. And through the years J-Mart, as it affectionately became known, has printed literally thousands of wedding announcements, baby births, missionary farewells, family histories, and everything from school and Sunday school lessons and for decades the news of the community in the Spanish Fork Press.
Today the web press is gone, and sadly so too is J.C. and Maureen is rarely seen in the shop, but in their places are son Lane Henderson and his wife, Leslie Money Henderson; along with equipment creating a facility that includes both digital laser printing and offset presses capable of accommodating print jobs as small as a few scrapbook pages or as large as thousands of business forms, and whatever has you searching for a printer with copies on demand and hardbound books if desired.
A seasoned veteran of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Lane has served on the Chamber board and held at least one term, if not two, as president of the organization; with this being a family tradition with both his mother and father both having been active in making the community’s Chamber come together and work for the good of the customer.
When the Henderson family was publishing the Spanish Fork Press it was the winner of many local, state and national reporting awards. And during the floods of 1983 was instrumental in helping residents keep up to date on the Thistle Slide and make preparations for what might be to come with rising river and lake waters.
Since that time J-Mart has always been active in the community in everything from Scouting to Fiesta Days, and most especially in helping to keep the city’s historic Main Street vibrant and customer friendly. Both Lane and Leslie Henderson have been and are active in many civic and community duties and affairs.
We had an amazing turnout today. Thank you to Macey's for the beautiful cake, and to SF17 for filming!

Maple Creek Home Health and Hospice

Clark H. Caras

Not everyone gets to be a part of a business that makes such a difference in other people’s lives.    At Maple Creek Home Health and Hospice,” Making a difference in people’s lives”, is the very essence of the job description of all who work or volunteer at Maple Creek Home Health and Hospice.

As the very first Diamond Member of the Spanish Fork/Salem Chamber of Commerce, Maple Creek has moved toward this new level of recognition by the Chamber of Commerce.  Maple Creek is locally owned and operated, as well as centered in the heart of the community they serve.  Carma Karsten, owner of Maple Creek Home health and Hospice, knows all of the wonderful services Maple Creek has to offer in regards to end of life care as well as the misconceptions and misunderstandings that come with the services Maple Creek Home Health and Hospice offers.  Being a Diamond Member of the Spanish Fork / Salem Chamber of Commerce is another way Carma plans on providing the education needed to prepare for end of life care.  “At some point in time, the end of life care discussion and decisions will affect everyone in the community, having the knowledge of the different resources and choices will be a great benefit to those who are unexpectedly faced with end of life care decisions.  It is important for everyone to be aware that more often than not, this conversation does come up unexpectedly.
Carmas’ passion for making sure those she cares for, as well as the loved ones of those she cares for, receive the best care and support possible to ensure the last days are the best days they can be.  This passion flows over to all others’ who work with Carma and it is apparent when you meet them and see them interact with others.
Carma makes sure that upon meeting any one whether a patient or family member, they have a clear understanding of what can be expected.  After over 20 years in Hospice care, the experience Carma has is passed along to all who work with her, with that being said, this kind of experience ensures you will be receiving the best care possible, Carma and her staff will all tell you the care they  give is heads above  the rest.  This is a very powerful statement considering the fact that the majority of the employees have worked for other agencies and have had the ability to compare the way things are done.  There is of course a higher expectation of the staff at Maple Creek and to meet that higher expectation, Carma understands the importance of ensuring all employees are provided with the time and resources to meet the expectations.  Having cared for those in the Community, if you ever come across someone who has an experience with Maple Creek, they will have nothing but praise for Carma and Maple Creek.
Hospice has been in Utah since the early 1980’s and Carma took part in starting up the first agency in the state.  In the beginning, it was an amazing service that was provided but as the years have passed, unfortunately the goal of the patient comes first always, became second to corporate policy and numbers.   For this very reason, Carma started her own company knowing that doing so, she was still able to ensure the patient always comes first.  She does not have to ask anyone’s permission in regards to medications, equipment or those in need who do not have the funding or insurance to cover it.  The patients’ needs will always come first.  Each person has different needs and these needs cannot be met if there are restrictions or limitations on what can be provided.
Although Maple Creek is located in Spanish Fork, they care for patients throughout Utah County.  Many of you have seen the bus stops in Spanish Fork as well as the Billboards along I-15.  Even with all of the advertising, word of mouth has still been the number one source of advertising.
Owning Maple Creek has been on Carma’s “bucket list” for a long time.  Knowing that when someone who invites her into their home, they have also invited her to be a part of one of life’s most amazing journey’s.
The Spanish Fork Chamber of Commerce would again like to thank Maple Creek Home Health and Hospice for its climb to Diamond Membership.

Winter Lights Parade!

Clark H. Caras

2015 Winter Lights Parade Winners!

Mayor's Choice:  Gunnerson Dental
Chambers Choice:  Mountain West Animal Hospital (Live Reindeer!)
Most Festive (from the Ford family): The Chambers float 'FROZEN'.

The 2015 Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Winter Lights Parade will go down in the history books as one of the brightest in recent memory.  With approximately 54 entries, and a few that showed up and plugged in and joined the fun at the last minute, the parade was one of the longest too; as well as the coldest.  Yet, I think everyone who participated, watched (most from the inside of parked cars and trucks along the way) will attest the parade is one of the best in the state.
In fact, the chamber is aware of many spectators coming in all the way from Draper and Salt Lake City.  Seen along the route was the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau Trolley filled to the rim with tourists from downtown Salt Lake hotels who request from the front desk ideas of what there is to see in the valley’s, both of them.
The Salt Lake Tribune named Spanish Fork the 14th most Christmas Community to visit during the holidays; this was based on the parade, the Festival of Lights, and Salem’s Pond Town Christmas.  Along with Salem’s lights in and around the Pond, former Salem mayor and chamber member, Lane Henderson, has coordinated a lighted trip through one of the community’s neighborhoods which visually and dramatically tells the story of the Nativity.  Half the fun is finding it, but if you travel 100 East in Salem to the canal, turn right and take the second left, you are there, or just about.

Tabitha's Way Donation!

During the 2015 December Noon Networking luncheon held at Triple T on 1555 North Main Street, the Chamber was able to have a bit of fun with White Elephant exchanges for the 50 attendees to have a good laugh at and take home.  But the best White Elephant of the event was able to go home with Wendy Osborn of Spanish Fork’s Tabitha’s Way.
The Chamber was able to present Wendy with a $1,500 check for Tabitha’s Way to use during the holidays for families in need.  Tabitha’s Way has been a member of the Chamber since Wendy arrived in town and moved the pantry and shop to the community’s Historic Main Street.  Wendy was of course more than gracious and grateful, and both Stacy Beck and Lance Wilson indicated this is the type of thing the chamber hopes to be doing more of as we grow.

Park Elementary "Leader in Me"

Park Elementary School is part of a great leadership program, "the leader in me ". As a chamber we were able to donate $1,500 to park Elementary to help pay their fees for the 2015 / 2016 school year to be part of this amazing program. Sixth grade students from the program gave the board members a tour of the school and explained the purpose of the leader in me program to us. After our tour we were able to present the check to the principal. What a great day and a fantastic program!
