Utah Farmers Markets: Where shoppers always buy locally

Barb Shelley, (2011) Utah Business.com

The recent proliferation of farmers markets seems almost unbelievable.

Despite the U.S. obesity epidemic and availability of fast food, despite the massive trends to centralize food production and distribution, and despite the fact that there is no single funding mechanism to trigger development, farmers markets have more than doubled across the country since 2004, according to a report by the Farmers Market Coalition, a New York based, not-for-profit organization formed to foster these budding retail market successes.

The growth trend is evident in Utah with more than two dozen farmers markets across the state as noted by the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food program Utah’s Own, which encourages Utahns to purchase locally produced products.
Perhaps the best known Utah farmers market is the Salt Lake City Downtown Farmers Market, staged Saturdays, June through October, at Pioneer Park. The market features fresh produce from more than 70 Utah farmers. Live music adds to the community atmosphere, as does the aroma of baked breads and pastries, cheeses, meat and seafood, jams and honeys, house and garden plants, handmade arts and crafts and, following a nationwide trend toward specialty foods, unique prepared foods and beverages.
“Farmers markets are the perfect place to grow a start-up business, test new products and build name recognition,” says Linda Gillmor, co-owner with her husband, Jamie, of Morgan Valley Lamb, a Delta-based sheep ranch. The Gillmors are vendors at the Salt Lake City and Park City markets and credit the markets with spurring demand for their lamb in local restaurants and grocery stores as well as their home delivery business.
“A top benefit for a producer is the fact that you sell retail, not wholesale at farmers markets,” says Jamie Gillmor, a third generation sheep and wool grower. “That gives a producer a better price and with the low overhead, a farmer can come out ahead of production costs.”
The Gillmors agree that meeting their customers face-to-face at the markets has been gratifying as well as an important marketing research channel. “Our customers, many of whom we know by name, give us instant feedback on our products, recipes and Website. It really helps us adjust immediately to meet their wants and needs,”
says Linda.
