June 2011 Business of the Month - Lance Wilson State Farm Insurance

"State Farm Insurance as a company is the largest auto and home insurer in North America; we insure more cars in Utah than any other insurer. We insure more vehicles nationwide than the next three largest companies combined. As a company we have been rated number one in claims service by JD Powers and Associates for over 20 years running. As for my agency I have been a State Farm agent since January of 2002… nine years (I can’t believe it!!). I have been awarded twice the prestigious President’s Club award by the CEO of State Farm in recognition for being one of the top 50 producing agents of over 17,000 agents company wide. My agency specializes in the best Auto, Motorcycle, Home, Umbrella, Boat, Life, Health and Business insurance in the industry."

Study: Utah amoung the best in adapting to world trade demands

Steven Oberbeck, Salt Lake Tribune May 24, 2011

A new study by Ball State University ranks Utah fourth in the nation for its ability to rapidly adapt to the highly competitive world of international trade.

Nalitra Thaiprasert, who conducted the study for the university’s Center for Business and Economic Research, said Utah and other states in the top five are among the best at producing products that world markets demand. Included are such merchandise as medical devices, pharmaceuticals and machinery.

“Like the other states in the top five, Utah has invested in several key industries over the past few decades,” she said. “And that bodes well for the state’s economy in the years ahead.”

The state’s emphasis on international business already has been beneficial for the state and its residents.

The U.S. International Trade Administration said in early March that Utah was the only state in which the value of its exports doubled in the past five years. The increase resulted in export-related jobs expanding to 93,000 last year from about 45,000 in 2006.

And in the 2010 New State Economy Index from the Kaufman Foundation in Kansas City, Utah ranked sixth nationally for the focus it puts on exporting its manufactured goods and services. The state also took over the top spot on the index as the most improved export state.

Lew Cramer is the president of the World Trade Center of Utah, an organization that helps companies learn the ins and outs of doing business overseas. He attributes Utah’s rise in prominence to the nimbleness of its businesses and the willingness of state government to partner with the private sector to help boost trade.

“It has been a cooperative effort,” Cramer said, noting that a new trade trend is recognized, his group and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development quickly try to organize a seminar to help businesses take advantage of the new opportunity.
