Candi Higley - Daily Herald Wed. Feb. 29 SPANISH FORK -- It was an evening of smiles, cheers and tears on Monday as 10 special needs young women, ranging in age from junior high to high school, from Nebo School District participated in the second annual Miss Teen Extraordinaire Pageant. The pageant was started by Whitney Talbert as part of her platform when she was participating in the Miss Spanish Fork Pageant. Talbert's platform, "Overcoming disabilities, embracing abilities," has been something that has been important to her since she was a little girl. "When I was about 9 years old, I baby-sat a little boy with Down syndrome," Talbert said. "And I just fell in love with him. During high school I became a peer tutor and really got involved with the students. I discovered they are just like us with personalities, talents, trials and struggles. I wanted to give them an opportunity to feel pretty and be recognized." read more...
