November 9 Lunch and Learn Marketing

with Seth Ollerton

There are 4.2 billion active users on social media. These users spend about 2.5 hours on average daily scrolling. Out of these 4.2 billion users, 99% use social on their mobile devices. Can you guess which social media platform is the largest globally? You guessed it, Facebook!

A mistake that social media users regularly make is not having a plan. The best way to keep social media active and keep content fresh and consistent is by creating a Social Media Calendar.

When building your calendar, use the 80/20 Rule. You want to have:

  • 80% of the content focused on education, information, and entertaining
  • 20% of content focused on promotion, sales, and lead generation

Another important topic of advice Seth shared with everyone was “don’t reinvent the wheel!” Look at the competition. What are they doing? What can you be doing better? Get inspired, but don’t copy.

  • Research Competition
    • How are competitors using social media?
    • Observe without copying
    • What’s working vs. not working
    • What ideas would you like to implement?
  • Get inspired by other businesses
    • Pay attention to your own favorite brands
    • What makes you want to click, follow, or buy?

Now audit your current social media.

  • Are all social media accounts on brand and consistent?
    • Does it have the same look and feel -images, logos, photos, and colors
    • How does it compare with your brand style guide
    • Is there consistently the same voice and content – hashtags, keywords, writing style

Seth discussed one more valuable piece of advice about social media that we want to share with you.

How to Advertise on Facebook

  • Choose your objective
  • Brand awareness: Introduce your brand to a new audience
  • Reach: Expose your ad to as many people in your audience as possible
  • Traffic: Drive traffic to a specific web page, app, or Facebook Messenger conversation
  • Engagement: Reach a broad audience to increase the number of post engagements or Page follows, increase attendance at your event, or encourage people to claim a special offer
  • App installs: Get people to install your app.
  • Set your budget and schedule: decide how much you want to spend and when your ads will run?
  • Target your audience: demographics
