Recycling is Important to People of ALL Ages!

Biz Recycling - Did you Know?
Start Your Recycling Habits Early!

In 2015, Oneka Elementary (one of the many schools in the White Bear Area School District) began designing a program to maximize food recycling with the help of BizRecycling and Washington County Staff. Oneka Elementary produces about 215 pounds of waste in its cafeteria each day, including about 350 milk cartons a day. Of this waste, only 80 pounds of food waste was being recycled, or about 37 percent of their total waste. Milk cartons were not being recycled.

Oneka Elementary planned to implement a new recycling program that would help them reduce their waste and their environmental footprint. After consulting with the school and evaluating their current recycling programs, BizRecycling recommended that school apply for a BizRecycling Grant.

The grant money helped Oneka Elementary to purchase new, stainless steel sorting tables, create an informational movie for staff and students and trained lunchroom staff to help and observe children with the sorting table. Once implemented, the sorting tables were a great success. Food waste recycling increased from 80 pounds to 160 pounds a day, a 103% increase. Click HERE to read more!
