Adopt-A-Hwy
Help Beautify Our Area
The Chamber has had the privilege of "adopting "a 2 mile stretch of Highway 61 for several years. Each year, a team of volunteers come together to pick up the trash along Hwy 61, from County Road F to Hwy 96 East. It's amazing how just 2 or 3 hours of your time can make such a big difference. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Maureen at 651-429-8593 or email maureen@whitebearchamber.com. Networking

October - Disability Awareness
October is Disability Awareness month. I believe the designation is to encourage citizens to view disability as a natural condition in the human race. What? Yep, it is a natural human condition and I will use myself as an example. I am a married father of three adult children, co-own my home with the mortgage company, have a Master’s Degree, am an Executive Director at Merrick, Inc., a local nonprofit, have an 18-handicap on the golf course, and love to wear Zubaz. Now some would say that wearing Zubaz is a disability in style, however my disabilities are vision related requiring corrective lens and a hearing loss requiring aids. In fact, if you take the broadest definition of disability, more than 60% of the population is disabled. My point is that disability should not separate us, make us feel uncomfortable, or interfere with the typical course of human interaction. After all, when you consider all the things that make us human, we have more in common than not. So, enjoy the variety in the human condition that disabilities bring as unique gifts to our communities. To learn more about how Merrick empowers adults with disabilities in our community, visit www.Merrickinc.org. John Wayne Barker Executive Director |
