Escaping famine and political oppression in Ireland, Irish immigrants overcame prejudice and discrimination in their new home of St. Louis. Patrick Murphy, author of “The Irish in St. Louis: From Shanty to Lace Curtain,” will talk about the people who reinvented themselves in an American city named for a saint. Their stories of determination, cultural pride, and religious faith cast light on the question of how people from around the world ultimately become Americans.
Patrick will present highlights from his book and show many of the rare photos he discovered during his research. There will be time for Q & A, and he’ll be on hand to sign books after the talk.
Patrick Murphy has worked for over 40 years in St. Louis radio and television, both on-air and as a 6-time Emmy winning producer of documentaries and musical variety shows. He is the author of several books on St. Louis and Missouri history.
