About Us
JAMES ORTIZ has more than a dozen years of experience specializing exclusively in the State and Local Tax (SALT) arena, both in a public accounting role and as a SALT specialist for an international clothing retailer. He has dealt with sales and use tax compliance for every state in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, James spent four years working at the New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department in a variety of roles, including serving as an auditor in the Audit & Compliance Division, as well as developing internal departmental procedures for auditing specialty refund claims. James has extensive experience in a wide range of industries, including, but not limited to: • Nonprofit • Healthcare • Construction and renewable energy • Real estate • Manufacturing • Software/technology, digital advertising and telecommunications Among the many opportunities and issues James handles are: • Tax credits and incentives • Refund requests • Audit representation and managed audits • Nexus determinations and letter rulings. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND MEMBERSHIPS James holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Science in Accountancy from the University of Phoenix. He is actively involved as a Business Advisor at New Mexico State University’s Arrowhead Business Center and for the Santa Fe Business Incubator. In addition, he currently chairs the New Mexico Society of CPA's Tax Committee and sits on the boards of both Catholic Charities of New Mexico, where he also serves as Treasurer, and the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce. AWARDS AND RECOGNITION James received Albuquerque Business First's annual “40 Under Forty”award for 2017, an honor that recognizes top, young professionals throughout New Mexico who excel in terms of their professional achievement, demonstrated leadership, and community involvement.
