Monica Toquinto is a Community Health Worker (CHW) with the New Mexico Community Health Worker Association and Nuestra Salud a community-based organization whose mission is to reduce health disparities in the Hispanic Community. Ms. Toquinto supported in the implementation of Spanish-language focus groups for the Dejelo Ya tobacco quitline media campaign for the NMDOH TUPAC program. Ms. Toquinto provides culturally relevant presentations on asthma, cancer control and prevention, diabetes education, tobacco control providing intensive tobacco brief interventions to many Spanish-speaking community members from the communities of Albuquerque, Belen, Bloomfield, Clovis, Española, Farmington, Gallup, Grants, Las Cruces, Los Lunas, Santa Fe, Ruidoso and Taos, N.M. reaching over 7,000 community members with education and prevention programs and providing clinical-linkages to over 300 communities members and establishing a medical home.
Ms. Toquinto served as the initial Ventanilla de Salud (VDS) Program Coordinator at the University of NM Cancer Center and the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque NM from 2008-2015. As the CHW at VDS Monica provided on-site assessment, referral, and linkage to available health services. In addition, Ms. Toquinto conducted an array of important public health and health care access topics including cancer awareness and prevention, tobacco control, diabetes, maternal-child health and other health issues that affect the Hispanic community in New Mexico.
Ms. Toquinto served as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer coordinator with Concilio CDS, Inc. whose mission is to eliminate poverty by providing access to quality civic engagement opportunities and serve the community with passion and commitment.
Ms. Toquinto was named and was honored as the Community Health Worker of the Year by the New Mexico Community Health Workers Association (NMCHWA) 2010.
