Explora is an innovative experiential learning center with a mission of creating opportunities for inspirational discovery and the joy of lifelong learning through interactive experiences in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Explora addresses its mission by providing exhibit activities and inquiry-based classroom programs that illuminate basic concepts and engage people of all ages with the tools and equipment related to scientific phenomena. At Explora, families engage with educational, science-rich materials in personal spaces; they get interested in science by manipulating a wide range of variables and engaging in shared learning. Parents see their children as capable and interested science learners, and everyone has an opportunity to develop his or her own thinking about the basic processes and materials investigated and used by science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Explora is the fulfillment of a collaborative vision. Incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in 1985, Explora Science Center merged with the Albuquerque Children’s Museum in 1995. With support from the City of Albuquerque, the State of New Mexico, Intel, and other corporations and foundations, Explora opened a new 50,000-square-foot experiential science center and children’s museum to the public in 2003. Since then, Explora has offered a variety of school-based programs, seasonal camps, after-school clubs, events for adults, professional development for teachers and scientists, and programs for early childhood learners, teens, and intergenerational child/caregiver learning teams.
Explora educators work from our home base in Albuquerque and from three regional hubs in Taos, Gallup, and Las Cruces, to provide educational programs for students, teachers, and families in all 33 counties of New Mexico.
