Bad for Business

With our goal of generating economic opportunity for Albuquerque, our businesses and the people of our great city, the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce engages in policy discussions that have a direct impact on the business community, employees, our city and state. And as the leading voice of the small business community, it is very important that our members and the rest of the small business community are well informed and educated on issues that will directly impact your business, as well as your personal life.

Bad for You

Wayne Overall of Wayne’s Automotive and Overall Services, a long-time member and an Ambassador for the Hispano Chamber, brought this potential but very realistic situation to our attention:

"My company has been in business since 2008 and I bought it fours ago.  I have always been a law-abiding citizen.  To me, doing what the law requires is the absolute minimum.  I pay my employees well and provide them with good benefits, including Paid Time Off.  I pride myself in treating my employees right and having satisfied customers.
So, what concerns me most about the “Paid Sick Leave” initiative is that it makes me look like I don’t care about my employees.   It will treat me worse than criminals who are assumed innocent until proven guilty.   Under this ordinance, if I take corrective action after an employee used sick leave, even for one day, I will be presumed guilty until I prove myself innocent, and will have to probably pay a lawyer to do it.  That means that even when I take NECESSARY corrective action to protect other employees, my customers, and my business, after that employee has taken a day of sick leave, under this initiative it will be PRESUMED that I am retaliating against that employee.
Me, retaliating against an employee -- nothing could be further than the truth! But under this ordinance, I would have to prove I didn’t.
I love my employees and I treat them well.  I don’t need to be feel like I am doing wrong, by doing good."

This ordinance can affect more than business, it can affect you
