Member Spotlight of the Week! Coldwater Orthodontics and Aligner Center

Coldwater Orthodontics and Aligner Center partnered with the Coldwater Area Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the opening of its newly constructed facility at 152 Division St., Coldwater, with a Ribbon Cutting and tour on November 30.
The new facility offers expanded capability and is designed with patient health and safety as top concern.  It offers functionality with all treatment chairs divided by permanent safety barriers.  New office technology also allows for full Invisalign treatment for teens or adults in as little as 3 in-person visits, with treatment guided by your local board-certified orthodontist.
Our team recognizes that all our patients are unique and deserve to receive orthodontic care that reflects their individual needs. We take great pride in our team - each person works exceptionally hard to make sure that they are well-trained and well-prepared, and enjoying their time with patients while they are here for treatment.
Dr. Baron Whateley is a native of Rochester Hills, Michigan.  He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Michigan and was later recruited to complete an orthodontic residency program at University of Detroit-Mercy where he graduated with an orthodontic certificate and Master of Science.  He holds an orthodontic specialty certificate and is a board-certified orthodontist, which signifies he is recognized by his peers for upholding the highest treatment standards in the orthodontic profession.
Dr. Whateley embodies a growth mindset and is committed to developing himself and those around him through routine continuing education.  He is also committed to donating care to African children with Cleft Lip/Palate to Ray Of Hope Medical Mission (ROHMM).

Restoration of Gillespie building sought

Southern Michigan Bank & Trust is currently working with the City of Coldwater and the State of Michigan to apply for grant funding to restore the former Gillespie building into a 7-unit housing structure.
Given the substantial investment required to rehabilitate the structure and bring it up to code, the feasibility of the project is contingent upon receiving funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation through its Rental Rehabilitation program. Through this program, the project is eligible for $420,000 of grant funding to help offset the total project cost, currently estimated at $1 million.
A significant part of this process includes many local approvals by the City of Coldwater Planning Commission, the Historic District Commission, and the Coldwater City Council. These approvals pertain to the rehabilitation plans and showing support for the project.
“We have spent a great deal of time and money to determine the best use of this property considering the needs of our community and what makes sense for downtown. Southern intends to submit a complete application to the MEDC this spring and hopes that our project will receive funds to move forward” says John Castle, Chairman and CEO.
If local approvals are secured and MEDC funds are awarded, the Gillespie project will convert a deteriorating building into much-needed housing for the community and add to Southern’s community improvement efforts. In addition to a recent renovation of their downtown offices, Southern has partnered with the City on several important initiatives. These include Southern’s contribution to the Downtown Development Authority’s Low Interest Loan Pool Program. This program offers local developers low interest loans and rebates for downtown development projects that include a façade improvement.
The Planning Commission public hearing for a special use permit is scheduled to be held on Jan. 4, 2021. Final funding decisions will be made by MEDC staff in early Spring.
Southern Michigan Bancorp, Inc. is a bank holding company and the parent company of Southern Michigan Bank & Trust. It operates fourteen branches within Branch, Calhoun, Hillsdale, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph Counties, providing a broad range of consumer, business and wealth management services throughout the region.
