Buckeye honoring Veterans all week

Buckeye is hosting a variety of programs and events honoring veterans and their families this week, including the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Memorial Wall. The Wall is an 80 percent replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C. and the largest replica traveling wall. It measures 8 feet high and 360 feet long, with over 58,000 names.

Here’s what’s happening:

Nov. 7, 6 p.m. - Mayor Jackie Meck will proclaim Buckeye as a Purple Heart City at the City Council meeting to recognize the service and sacrifice of our nation’s men and women, who were wounded or killed while serving to protect our freedom.

• Also at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7, the Small Business Administration is conducting a workshop for veterans to learn how to start or grow a business at the Coyote Branch Library, 21699 W. Yuma Road.

Nov. 8, 2 p.m. – Be part of the procession as The Wall leaves the Palo Verde Education Center, 600 N. Verrado Way and makes its way through the city to Earl Edgar Recreational Facility, 500 S. Miller Road.

Nov. 8, 3 p.m. - Join hundreds of school children as they welcome as they welcome The Wall along Monroe Ave. in downtown Buckeye from 10th Street to Miller Road.

Nov. 9, Noon – Opening ceremony for The Wall, then the display is open continuously until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12. A variety of special events and ceremonies are scheduled during this time.

Nov. 10, 10 a.m. – Hike to honor veterans at Skyline Park, 2600 N. Watson Ro ad. Take a 3-mile round trip hike to Valley Vista Summit and help post an American Flag.
