Dad Stuff You Should Know

Father's Day History

The U.S. Father’s Day was actually conceived by a woman named Sonora Dodd in Seattle when she was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. Dodd wanted a day to honor her father who raised his six children alone after his wife passed away. The first celebration was in 1910.

A Few Cool Dad Stories

Halsey Taylor invented the drinking fountain in 1912 as a tribute to his father, who succumbed to typhoid fever after drinking from a contaminated public water supply in 1896.

A.A. Milne created Winnie the Pooh for his son, Christopher Robin. Pooh was based on Robin's teddy bear, Edward, a gift Christopher had received for his first birthday, and on their father/son visits to the London Zoo, where the bear named Winnie was Christopher's favorite. Pooh comes from the name of Christopher's pet swan.

The Stevie Wonder song "Isn't She Lovely" is about his newborn daughter, Aisha. If you listen closely, you can hear Aisha crying during the song.

Super Important "Dad" Trivia

In the underwater world of the seahorse, it's the male that gets to carry the eggs and birth the babies.

According to a 2014 Psychological Science study, it is suggested that dads who perform more chores at home are likely to have daughters with dreams of higher paying careers.

4th of July 2020 Business Challenge

Events Canceled

After much discussion with our County Officials, and waiting as long as possible for some hoped for change in status, we have regretfully canceled our 4th of July activities, the Reverse Parade and Fireworks Spectacular.  Though we had maintained hope that some things might be feasible, it just is not the case yet, and will not be by the 4th.

We are hopeful that those recreating in our area understand and will continue to enjoy the fact that we are open, that our businesses are happy to see and serve them, and that by being pro-active and safe, we will continue to be so.

Now the Challenge is On!

We have been notified by some of our Chamber Businesses that since the Reverse Parade is not to happen, they intend to "decorate to the hilt".  And, oh dear, they are challenging others to do the same ....kind of personally.  The first challenge appeared on Facebook this week.  Coldwell Banker Kehr/O'Brien (Chester Office) challenged Plumas Bank to a decorate-off.  Will they accept?  Follow our Facebook page to see their answer!

34th Street Rod Info

George Grams

Plans continue for the 34th Annual Street Rod Extravaganza, scheduled for Saturday September 12th at Chester Community Park, presented by the Lake Almanor Elks Lodge 2626. As so many other car shows in the region have been cancelled, our event has turned into ... The Little Car Show That Could. Although hard to predict in these uncertain times, there seems a good likelihood that we could have a big turnout.

The event will have some new additions to include the Friday night Taco Dinner, Saturday morning Pancake Breakfast, BBQ Lunch at the event, free popcorn and face painting for kids, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and of course, beautiful cars of every vintage.

Public admission is free. To register for the event, go to www.lakealmanorarea.com/streetrad. For questions, please contact Event Coordinator, George Grams at 530.519.6428.

State of the Lake Survey

Survey

Sierra Institute and Feather River Land Trust are teaming up to bring you a digital version of their State of the Lake event. This summer, they plan to convene a series of panels with local experts who will share important updates about trends in forest management, watershed health, wildfire mitigation, and water quality among other topics that affect our quality of life. But to make these events the best they can be, they need your input. Please take a moment to answer these 3 questions to assist them.

Caltrans to construct extension to Lake Almanor Recreation Trail

Almanor Recreation & Parks District

On May 13, 2020, the California Transportation Commission approved the proposed 2020 State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) for the “West Almanor Project”. It was submitted by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). The SHOPP includes pavement rehabilitation along State Route (SR) 89 between SR 147 at Canyon Dam and SR 36, west of Chester. The project also includes the construction of a separated, paved, class I bike path along the east side of SR 89 within the portion of the Caltrans right-of-way near the Lake. The bike path will extend the existing Lake Almanor Recreation Trail (LART) another 3.7 miles northward from the Forest Service trailhead south of the Almanor West subdivision to Forest Service Road 28N82 near the SR 36 intersection. This SHOPP project includes planning, engineering and design, and construction activities for rehabbing the highway and creating the bike path during 2020 to 2024.
