Our Very Own Santa

John Crotty with the Almanor Fishing Association and Quail Lodge has been giving away fishing poles to children in need. When others in the community heard of this, many donated more poles to support his efforts. This is exactly what makes our community so special.

Thank you John, and for all those who donated.

Trip the Lights Fantastic

The perfect outing for the family! Many of our residences and stores have gotten into the holiday spirit by setting their homes, shops and businesses "ablaze" with colorful lights, animated characters, and Christmas music.  If you and your elves have "lit-up" your place, please add the address to our Christmas Map by emailing to info@lakealmanorarea.com

Almanor Fishing, Weather & Lake Report

John Crotty, Almanor Fishing Association, Amateur Santa

Winter has finally arrived at Lake Almanor. Phew! We received a light dusting of snow last Friday, and then Sunday morning, with a temperature of 30 degrees, the glorious “white stuff” began falling once again. Our forecast is calling for snow and rain with daytime highs reaching 40 degrees and nighttime lows in the teens for the next seven days.  I am cautiously optimistic the current weather trend will continue through the winter and into spring and replenish California’s lakes and reservoirs.

Water temps remain in the 40s; lake level has risen fractionally since last report and visibility remains unchanged. The current lake level is 4478, down eight feet from December 13, 2019. As water temps continue to drop, fish will begin to migrate to the south end of the lake in search of food. They will continue to feast on pond smelt and start focusing on insects around the shoreline in the coves. There has been minimal boat traffic and an increase in shore fishing over the past week.

Trollers are having limited success with similar results from both fast and slow trolling. Speedy shiners at 2.5-3 mph, flies at 1.5-2mph, and gulps and crawlers at 1mph with preferred depths changing daily.  Flies, bait, and hardware will all catch fish in the coves.

We are currently under a winter weather advisory with chains required over the passes. The Canyon Dam boat ramp is open and is the only usable public ramp on the lake.
