Seneca Healthcare has a New Phone Number

The telephone number for Seneca Healthcare District (SHD) has changed. The majority of Seneca's publicly published numbers for the hospital, clinic, doctor’s offices, and more will be directed to a new number.

Seneca has a new tollfree number: 1(833) 227-3743 or 1(833) careSHD. The number has changed as part of a transfer to a new telephone system with the addition of a new telephone operator position. Seneca will now have a live person answering the phones Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. If the phone is not answered within 24 seconds, the call will automatically redirect to a phone tree where individuals can select the department they need. The phone tree setting will also be active on nights and weekends. A general voicemail will be available as well.

The Almanor Foundations Hosts a Winning Event with the Chilly Chili Cook-Off

Katherine Sansone, The Almanor Foundation

With the weather a balmy 47 degrees, over 400 chili tasters came to sample the chili from 11 local chefs, and one from Redding, vying to be the best of in three different categories, and support the efforts to raise money for the cost of the Chester Ice Skating rink. “An event in the winter is always a risk but we couldn’t have been happier with the turnout,” says Tom Greely, chair and TAF board member. “This community always ‘shows-up’ … and just as importantly knows how to make an event a celebration,” he adds.

Twelve chefs entered the chili competition. Judges, Carol Franchetti, owner of Carol’s Café, Berton Bertagna from the Timber House Restaurant and Lodge and new supervisor, Tom McGowan, took their job quite seriously in choosing the winner.  Judges’ choice first place winner went to Almanor Fishing Association, John Crotty with American Homes and Land and team Diana Long and Dawn Lee, coming in second and third, respectfully. People’s Choice also went to AFA, with Clear Creek Reload in second and Don McDainels, Texas Pete Chili placing third. Showmanship went to Christa and Josh Herman, Almanor Wakesport, with Clear Creek Reload and Jason Alvarez placing second and third. The award for “Best Touque of 2023” went to Tim O’Brien of the Coldwell Banker booth, who was sporting the hat he received from Jungle Bird (of golfing notoriety) in 2012.

Joining the event was award-winning ice carver Tim Carman from Carson City. Soon to retire from ice carving, he began working on 1,000lbs of ice with a chain saw and fine tuning his piece of art with hand chisels and delicate touch.  Though he did not complete the sculpture, all guests enjoyed watching the transformation and an artist at work. The cook-off also heralded the sounds from TAF director and singing dentist, Jeff Benedictson, who kept the place rocking with a wide selection of tunes. A successful raffle was held with prizes donated by many local merchants and the Katie Grace Foundation, and the beverage cart, manned by the Lake Almanor Area Chamber was busy throughout the day.

Smores were pre-packed by event planners to be enjoyed around the fire pits. But things went a little differently than expected.  Susan Bryner, TAF Executive director said, “We set the smores out with a sign indicating a modest fee when an anonymous donor came by, put down $20.00 and said, ‘make the next eight kids happy.’ Then with each package we gave away, more people came by to ‘pay it forward’ until all the smores were gone. We had a crowd of happy kids and a lot of sticky faces.”

“The Almanor Foundation in partnership with the Lake Almanor Area Chamber has been so pleased with how much enjoyment the community is getting from the ice-skating rink.  In the works for two years to now have it as part of the projected Town Plaza makes all the work, time and effort worth it,” says Susan Bryner. “With the success of this event, we are one step closer to community ownership of the rink, which we all can take pride in and enjoy every season.”

Almanor Fishing Report

John Crotty

2/21/2023

Spring was in the air for a few days in Plumas County. Anglers took advantage of the 50 degree weather on Presidents Day as the Canyon Dam parking lot was full,  I counted nine boat trailers in the parking lot and more than a dozen anglers along the shore lines. All enjoying a day off work. Catching was tough, the fishing was fantastic.

Ice remains on the northwest section of the lake and in coves, the ice around the Canyon Dam boat ramp is gone (for the moment). Lake temperature remain in the mid-thirties, with the series of storms and cooler weather over the next ten days we could see  ice return and the ramp being unusable once again. Lake level remains unchanged, in fact, we have not seen an increase in water level   for the past thirty days.

There were a few fish caught on Monday, they were just far and few in between. The bite was early and short for trollers. Hamilton Branch is your best shot at catching fish from shore.

Highway 70 remains closed and there is a short delay on Highway 32. It’s time to put the chains back in your vehicle and check road conditions as we have chances of wind, rain & snow for the next eight days. Our predicted highs for Wednesday and Thursday are 27 and 24 degrees.
