Workforce Housing Making Inroads
Katherine Sansone
A workshop was recently held on November 16 at the Elegant Farmer, hosted by The Almanor Foundation. The workshop, led by Tyler Pew, owner of LMNOP and contractor to the foundation, aimed to address the ongoing workforce housing issue in Greenville and Lake Almanor.
According to Pew, who was raised in Greenville, the issue of workforce housing has been a concern in the county for some time. However, after the Dixie Fire destroyed Greenville, one of the major hubs for such housing, the problem could no longer be ignored. The limited availability of housing has led to local businesses constantly struggling to find employees. Susan Bryner, executive director of the foundation, explains that workforce housing was a top concern for all industries during their first consortium in the fall of 2019. Recognizing the complexity of the issue, the foundation hired Tyler to tackle the problem, using funding from the foundation.
The recent workshop provided an opportunity for Tyler to gather additional information from the community and test some of the strategies that have been developed to address the issue. Participants were asked a series of questions to gauge their stance on the issue and determine the level of importance they placed on various factors like speed of implementation and the quality of housing. The workshop also explored other aspects, such as the use of innovative products, the choice between hiring local developers or using outside professionals and identifying the best sources of funding.
With housing being considered at a crisis level in Plumas County, the workshop generated meaningful discussions among the 14 participants. The positive aspect is that housing is a nationwide issue, and the ideas being developed by The Almanor Foundation could set a precedent for other rural areas facing similar challenges. Tyler and his team plan to conduct more workshops throughout the spring of 2024.
Their goal is to gather more information and gain the support of the community, which is crucial for the success of such an extensive project. The Housing Committee at The Almanor Foundation, consisting of Judy Chynoweth, David Korol, Jack Montgomery, Julie Childers, and Susan Bryner, plays an important role in overseeing TAF's other projects related to rebuilding after the Dixie Fire. These projects include the completion of the Greenville and Canyon Dam Town Center Planning project this past summer, as well as the ongoing
Indian Valley Master Infrastructure Planning Project, which began in October. If you have any questions or would like to participate, please email admin@almanorfoundation.org.
Plumas National Forest Christmas tree permits on sale for the holiday season
Plumas National Forest Christmas tree permits on sale for the holiday season
QUINCY, CA — With the holiday season officially underway, Christmas tree permits for the
Plumas National Forest are available at local Ranger District offices or online through
www.Recreation.gov/.
Permits cost $10 and are nonrefundable. A maximum of two permits can be purchased per
household and can be used through December 31. Permits are only valid for this year.
Each permit is valid to cut one tree and must be secured to the tree in a place visible during
transport of the tree from the forest.
The Forest is no longer offering mail-in Christmas tree permits. However, purchasing the permit online through Recreation.gov is a great and convenient option. Just search for “Plumas National Forest Christmas Tree Permit”. The permit cost through Recreation.gov is $10. Up to two permits can be purchased and there is a $2.50 service charge per transaction. The purchase can be done from a computer or mobile device and must be printed and visible on the vehicle dashboard when transporting the tree.
Christmas tree permits from the Plumas National Forest are valid for use on the Forest. It is the responsibility of the cutter to ensure they are not getting their tree from private, state or other federal lands. Christmas trees also cannot be harvested in Congressionally-designated
Wilderness Areas, active timber sales, developed recreation sites or tree plantations.
Fourth graders with a valid Every Kid Outdoors (EKO) pass can use their pass to get a free
Christmas tree permit on the Plumas National Forest to enjoy with their family. EKO passes can also be acquired by visiting https://everykidoutdoors.gov and completing the
application process. Recreation.gov has an option for EKO passholders to get their Christmas tree permit online, but there is still the $2.50 service charge for the transaction. Just search for the national forest where you want to cut your tree, check the box for the EKO pass, enter the EKO voucher or pass number and complete the purchase information.
Local Forest offices can answer questions regarding Christmas tree cutting, current conditions and roads. It is recommended to call to verify that Christmas tree permits are available at the Forest Service office and methods of payment being accepted. All offices will be closed Thursday, November 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Cutting a Christmas tree on the National Forest is a great holiday tradition for many families and also helps with hazardous fuels reduction by removing smaller trees from the Forest. Following are some tips to make your experience more enjoyable.
Plan your trip – check the weather, bring plenty of warm clothes, water, emergency food,
tire chains, shovel, a saw or axe to cut your tree, and a tarp and rope to bring it home.
Make sure you have a full tank of gas when you leave and are prepared for changing
conditions in the mountains! Also, let someone know where you are going, the route you
are taking and when you plan to be back.
Keep vehicles on designated roads and be aware of changing weather and road conditions. Wet dirt roads can quickly turn to mud, making it possible to get stuck and causing damage to road, soil and water resources. If there are puddles in the road, mud flipping off the tires or you can see your ruts in the rearview mirror, consider pulling over and taking a hike to look for a tree, or turning around and finding a different area to cut your tree.
Avoid traveling in the forest during storms or windy conditions. Falling and downed trees,
as well as landslides, can block roads with little to no warning.
Cut your tree early in the season before favorite cutting areas can’t be reached because of
snow.
Cut the tree as close as possible to the ground and leave as little of a stump as possible.
Attach the permit on the tree where it will be easily visible with the tree packed or tied on
your vehicle for transport home.
To help keep your tree fresh, cut at least one inch off the base when you get home and
stand the tree in a container of water in a cool, shaded area, checking the water level daily.

Almanor Fishing Association Report
John Crotty 11/27/23
Lake level is up slightly currently sitting at 4487.04, while water temperature has dropped, ranging between and 46 and 47 ½ degrees. Clarity remains unchanged at seven to ten feet. Afternoon winds the past few days have made for tough fishing conditions. NOAA is predicting chances of snow and rain beginning Tuesday and lasting through (at least) Sunday, with daytime highs forecast to be in the high thirties to low forties and overnight lows in the mid-twenties. If the forecast is correct, we will see our first snow at lake level this season. If the snow is significant launching at Canyon Dam could be challenging at best.
Shore anglers are picking up quality fish in the coves around the dam and along the West Shore (where access permits). Geritol, Keddie and Roadside by the dam are accessible. Hamilton Branch is also kicking out fish for shore anglers. The restroom at Hamilton Branch is closed for the season.
Bait is becoming scarce, and fish are scattered. We started our day at the dam yesterday finding a couple of fish, went to Dorado where we picked up a few more before completing our day at Rec # 1 where we picked up a half dozen. Of the dozen or so fish we caught three were bows and the rest browns. There was no rhyme or reason we just covered ground and would pick up fish whenever we found pond smelt. Our most productive depths were 20-30’.
It’s that time of year, bait and fish will continue to migrate to the dam, trollers and shore anglers will find continued success around the dam through the winter as water temperatures continue to drop.
Winter fishing can be good on Almanor, caution needs to be exercised traveling to and from, launching and navigating. Boat ramps will freeze over and just getting out of your vehicle can be hazardous as the ramp ices up instantly after a boat launches in front of you. Ice is already beginning to form on the North side of the causeway, the main body of the lake will see patches of ice soon.
Carry chains, dress appropriately and be prepared for any/all winter conditions. |
