About Journey21

Journey21

Journey21 began in 2014 when two mothers, Sheila and Susan, met while watching their sons Marvin, Max, and Matt compete in a Special Olympics track meet. United by a shared vision, they dreamed of a future where young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) could continue to live full, independent, and socially connected lives beyond the supportive environment of high school and transition programs.

As their sons thrived in inclusive educational settings, the mothers recognized the lack of support available once these services ended at age 21. They, like many families, faced critical uncertainties about housing, employment, and long-term care. With more than 17,000 adults with IDD in Wisconsin still living at home due to a shortage of safe, supportive options, the need for a better solution was clear.

In response, Journey21 was created to offer more than just housing it is a vibrant, inclusive community. With thoughtfully designed residences, social and educational programs, and a dedicated Enrichment Center, Journey21 empowers adults with IDD to live meaningful, connected, and independent lives. It represents a path forward one built on possibility, inclusion, and hope for a brighter future.
