Our mission is to enable African Americans and other minorities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights through advocacy activities and the provision of programs and services in our uniquely diversified city and region. We'll Impress You
Founded in 1921, the Los Angeles Urban League is the city's premier community organization in advancing equal opportunities on behalf of African Americans and other minorities. In 2007, the Los Angeles Urban League began our pilot Neighborhoods@Work initiative to create systemic change in a 70-square block area in the Park Mesa Heights community.
The overarching goal of the holistic Neighborhoods@Work model is to build a replicable, 21st-century model for urban transformation. It is a model that requires time –
hence, we have a five-year planning horizon. It is also a model requiring extensive collaboration – which led us to establish more than 100 vibrant partnerships in just the first year.
Finally, it is a model that requires careful tracking and reporting of results — which is a primary driver for this report on our first year’s progress.
One critical factor in the continued deterioration of our urban neighborhoods has been the lack of focus on the interrelatedness of challenges within our communities. Education, employment, safety, health and housing programs typically work to address their respective issues independently, inspite of the fact that many problems arise as a result of their interdependency. One discipline
can drastically affect the next, and so solutions must be holistic.
