ADVOCACY  UPDATE

REVENUE MATTER HEARINGS
The House Revenue and Finance Committee held a subject matter hearing on several revenue proposals that could have a major impact on Illinois business. Specifically, HB 3359 (Turner) which creates a satellite TV tax by imposing a tax on the providers of digital audio-visual works to subscribers and creates the Entertainment Tax Fairness Act, which imposes a tax on the subscribers of loosely defined 'entertainment.' HB 270 (Murphy) also received a subject matter hearing. This bill changes the sourcing of local taxes to a destination-sourcing basis for all sales of tangible personal property made via the internet, over the phone or in writing and that are delivered. In addition to adding an incredible degree of complication to Illinois internet sales, it could also change how customers who currently come into stores to make purchases may interact with businesses. The Chamber is opposed to both bills.

CHAMBER URGES GOV. PRITZKER TO VETO WORK COMP BILL
Today, the  Chamber submitted a letter to Governor Pritzker urging him to veto SB 1596 (Sims/Hoffman). The legislation is intended to overturn the 2015 Illinois Supreme Court decision of Folta v. Ferro Engineering, where the court affirmed the employers' protection of exclusive remedy under the Workers' Compensation and Occupational Diseases Acts. However, SB 1596 provides that the restriction in prosecution of a claim against an employer under both the WC/OD Acts "do not apply to any injury or death sustained by an employee as to which the recovery of compensation benefits under this Act would be precluded due to the operation of any period of repose or repose provision." Instead of the protections provided by the WC/OD Acts, employers will now face civil actions with unlimited awards, including punitive damages, from cases where the action has been previously barred. Read our veto letter here.

Local HSHS Hospitals in Breese, Greenville & Highland are Raising Awareness during National Nutrition Month

(Breese, Greenville, Highland, IL)  – HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Breese and Highland and HSHS Holy Family in Greenville are educating the community about nutrition and the importance of eating healthy during National Nutrition Month. According to our Community Health Needs Assessment performed in 2018 for Clinton, Bond and Madison counties, obesity is one of the top priority improvement areas.

Despite numerous campaigns by health professionals and the CDC to eat healthy, Americans struggle with eating well and the subsequent obesity that can occur with poor eating habits.  According to the CDC to eat healthy, Americans struggle with eating well and the subsequent obesity that can occur with poor eating habits.  According to the CDC, approximately 93.3 million of US adults are obese.  With obesity comes obesity-related diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer.

The CDC estimates that fewer than one in 10 children and adults eat the recommended daily amount of vegetables, and only four in 10 children and fewer than one in seven adults eat enough fruit.  Lack of proper nutrients impacts overall health and our economy.  Poor nutrition can be costly if diseases develop as a result.

“As a dietitian I work one-on-one with clients to guide them in making the best nutrition choices possible to benefit their needs to live their best lives,” said Brooke Lipe, RD, LD, Registered Dietitian for HSHS St. Joseph’s Highland and HSHS Holy Family Greenville. “By taking mindful steps and eating a balanced diet that includes all food groups, we can live our best lives.”

St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese and Highland and Holy Family in Greenville offer clinical nutrition services with our Registered and Licensed Dietitians, Angela Kruse, Brooke Lipe and Kayla Barnes. Our dieticians provide knowledge and education on how to live a healthier lifestyle while still maintaining convenience and affordability.

“Living a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition is highly important for reducing risk of obesity and obesity-related diseases, said Angela Kruse, MS, RD, LD for St. Joseph’s Breese and Holy Family Greenville. “In addition, we also work with patients who are faced with diseases unrelated to obesity to assist them in finding the right nutritional balance they need.”

Counseling appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a referral from your primary care physician. If you do not have a primary care doctor, visit hshsmd.org to find a health care professional.
