Hard Road Theatre Productions

YOU CAN DANCE, YOU CAN JIVE, AND HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE WITH HARD ROAD THEATRE

Sponsored by Staunton Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Hard Road Theatre Productions is proud to present their 2019 summer production of MAMMA MIA! Based upon the Broadway musical of the same name, MAMMA MIA! features songs and music originally written and performed by ABBA. Some of the songs featured in the production include “Super Trooper,” “Dancing Queen,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Money, Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes All,” “SOS,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and the title number, “Mamma Mia!” ABBA’s songs have been woven together to tell the hilarious story of a woman’s search for her father on the eve of her wedding. Her quest brings three men from her mother’s past back to a Greek island they each last visited 20 years ago. Confusion and hilarity ensue as ABBA’s timeless songs propel this enchanting tale of love, laughter, and friendship, creating an unforgettable show full of big laughs and intense dance numbers. This is the first time MAMMA MIA! is being performed in Highland.

MAMMA MIA! is directed by Eric Sykes with musical direction by David Wilton and Thomas Taylor IV and choreography by Christine Taylor. The cast for the show includes an equal mix of both Hard Road veterans and newcomers. “I’m so proud of this cast and what they’ve put into this production,” Sykes says. “Each cast member has put in well over 100 hours each into this show. Audiences are going to love it.”

Performance dates for MAMMA MIA! are July 26, 27, Aug. 2, and 3 at 7:30 p.m. and July 28 and Aug. 4 at 2:00 p.m. The show is being performed at the Highland Middle School, 2813 State Route 160, Highland, IL. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $11 for senior citizens and children (ages 4-12). Physical tickets can be purchased at the Highland Chamber of Commerce or at the door. In addition, tickets are available for sale online via the Hard Road website (hardroad.org). Seating is limited for this production, so it is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance.

Rep. Charlie Meier to Host 8th Annual
Evening on the Meier Farm

Representative Charlie Meier would like to invite you and your family to the eighth annual “An Evening on the Meier Farm.”

The event will be held on Friday, July 26th, 2019, from 5:00 – 8:00pm.  This event is free and open to everyone.

It is a chance to meet Rep. Charlie Meier and see his historic family farm built by his Great Grand Parents.  Charlie’s grandmother Christina Borgmann using mules, hauled all the logs to build this home.  Charlie has preserved many family antiques and tours of the home will be available.  There will be an opportunity for kids to have a tractor ride and see what it is like living on a farm.   This year we will all see the updates Rep. Meier has added to his home.

Charlie will provide brats, hot dogs, lemonade, tea and water.  Please feel free to bring lawn chairs and spend time with us.  We will have a tent and expect this event to happen rain or shine.

Several other state and local politicians have been invited to join in on the evening.
Directions to Charlie Meier’s farm are as follows:  From 64 take exit 41 and turn towards Okawville.  You will take a left Hen House Road.  Hen House road will be our first left and is between the Dollar General Store and Road Ranger Gas Station.  You will go 1/3 of a mile to a stop sign (T road) and make a right on 5th Street Road.  Going west another 1/3 of a mile you will cross a bridge.  Immediately after the bridge on the left is the driveway to the Meier Farm.  This road will take you straight to the house.  The address is 13597 Railroad Rd, Okawville, IL.

Hope to see you all there!

Fairs and Festival Fun – How to Stay Safe This Summer

(BREESE, GREENVILLE, HIGHLAND, IL) – Summers are synonymous with fairs, festivals, outdoor concerts, and carnivals.  Good music, tasty food, and fun rides and games at these events draw large crowds every summer.  With the Clinton, Madison and Bond County fairs upon us over the next few weeks, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Breese and Highland, and HSHS Holy Family in Greenville want to ensure those who attend stay safe.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, foodborne illnesses increase during the summer months, due in part to the increase of food being cooked outdoors.  Food safety practices should be the same at fairs as they are at restaurants and at home. Illinois law requires permits through county and local public health departments. Before you buy food from a vendor at a fair or festival, consider the following:

  • Does the vendor have a clean workstation?
  • Does the vendor have a sink for employees to wash their hands?
  • Do the employees wear gloves or use tongs when handling food?
  • Does the vendor have refrigeration on site for raw ingredients or pre-cooked foods?
  • Has the vendor been inspected?
While at fairs, festivals and carnivals, it is also important to wash your hands often.  This is especially true after petting animals, touching the animal enclosure, and exiting the animal enclosure – even if you did not touch an animal.  Additionally, always wash hands after using the restroom, after playing a game or going on a ride, and before eating or drinking.  In case there are no places to wash hands, bring hand sanitizers or disposable wipes to use.

Other important tips to keep in mind when attending festivals and fairs:
  • Drink plenty of water – This is especially true if it is a hot day with a high heat index and/or if any alcohol consumption occurs.
  • If alcohol is available, exercise care.  Don’t take drinks from strangers and don’t leave your drink unattended.  Monitor your alcohol intake carefully, and do not use alcohol as a substitute for water.  Since alcohol can dehydrate the body, it’s important to drink as much (if not more) water than alcohol.
  • Ensure you have suitable clothing for the weather conditions and the location of the event.
  • Take proper sun safety measures – Apply and reapply sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater, seek shade periodically, wear sunglasses, and use protective barriers such as clothing and hats.
