Rep. Meier to Host Ceremony Designating Route 160 Overpass -  ‘Richard Clayton Bridge’

Highland, IL…Illinois State Representative Charlie Meier (R-Okawville) will be hosting a ceremony to designate the bridge on Route 160 between Highland and Grantfork in Madison County crossing over I-70 as the “Richard Clayton Bridge”. The ceremony is open to the public and will be held at the Nagel farm on the South West corner before the bridge on Saturday, August 24th beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Richard Clayton graduated from Pocahontas High School, where he was a star basketball player. He enrolled in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, but his family’s finances did not allow him to stay and earn a degree, so he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1950, achieving the rank of sergeant and serving honorably until his discharge in 1952.

Following Richard Clayton’s service to our country, his career became focused on highway bridge construction in Southern Illinois until he retired and opened a new business. In 1985, Richard Clayton started Chipwood Acres Nursery with his wife on their property along Route 160, it was a successful tree and plant nursery for 20 years where they shared their landscaping talents with the local community.

In honor of Richard Clayton’s contribution to the betterment of the State, the Illinois General Assembly chose to designate the bridge on Route 160 between Highland and Grantfork in Madison County crossing over I-70 as the “Richard Clayton Bridge”.

The bridge dedication is open to the public for anyone interested in attending. For more information about the ceremony, please contact Rep. Meier’s office at 618-651-0405.

Heartland Community Chorus is a performing ensemble for singers in the Southern Illinois area, based in Highland. Members hail from Highland, Troy, St. Rose, Trenton, Greenville, St. Jacob, Columbia, Pocahontas, Edwardsville, and Pierron. The chorus, beginning its seventh season, is directed by Luanne Murphy. Three concerts per year are presented by the group.

Singers over the age of sixteen are welcome to join the chorus. At this time, tenors and basses are particularly needed. Altos and sopranos are welcome to audition, but may be put on a waiting list. Auditions will be held in the Choir Room in St. Paul Hall, 1412 Ninth Street in Highland, on Friday, August 30th from 6:00-8:00p.m., and on Saturday, August 31st from 10:00a.m. to noon. If you cannot make either of those dates, please contact Luanne Murphy, Artistic Director, to arrange an appointment at 618.791.8408.

For your audition, you will be asked to sing a song of your choice, with piano accompaniment. You may choose a hymn, art song, patriotic song, or Broadway selection; it does not have to be memorized. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring two copies of your music. You will also be asked to sing some five-note scales to check your range, and to match some pitch patterns. For your convenience, there will be copies available for your use of a few standard selections (such as “Amazing Grace”, “America”, “God Bless America”).

Chorus rehearsals are on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30p.m at St. Paul Church, 1412 Ninth Street, Highland, IL. The first rehearsal is September 9th, the Monday after Labor Day. If you have any questions, please contact Luanne at 618.791.8408.
