Relevant Pregnancy Options Center
The 10th annual Steps for Life 5k to benefit Relevant Pregnancy Options Center is Saturday, September 28, 2019 on the square in Highland. Registration. Check-in begins at 7am and the 5k run and 2 mile walk begin at 8am. Participants can register online at www.supportrelevant.org. Those wishing to make a donation to the cause can do so online as well.
Registration, pre-event and post-event rally, start and finish line will take place at Highland's Historic Square located on Broadway. The cost to register is: 18 and older $25; 11-17 $15; 10 and under are free. (T-shirts for 10 and under: $7)

The annual Street Art Festival and Vendor Fair & Makers Market will be held on Saturday, September 21st (with September 22nd as a rain date). The streets of downtown Highland will once again become a temporary art gallery as artists transform the pavement into colorful works of art. We invite you to express your support of the arts and our community by being a part of this unique experience!

***We are looking for SWAG for our artist gift bags. If your business has a clever advertising item to add to our bag, or would be interested in donating water bottles or a small snack, our artists would greatly appreciate it. We would need 40 of whatever you are donating to be delivered to the Chamber office by Monday, September 16, 2019. Good times to deliver are during the morning between 9 - noon. Advocacy Awareness

This week marked the final week in which the Governor must have acted on legislation passed out of the legislature from this spring.
The final tally: 591 Bills Signed by the Governor and 9 Bills Vetoed by the Governor.
See below for a list of bills signed by the Governor since last week that may be of interest to the business community.
GOVERNOR TAKES FINAL BILL ACTION
SB 161 Creates the Worker Protection Unit within the Attorney General to intervene in, initiate, enforce, and defend all criminal or civil legal proceedings on matters and violations relating to specified statutes. The Chamber opposed this bill.
HB 2076 Provides that beginning January 1, 2020, no person shall manufacture thermal paper. Provides that no person shall distribute or use any thermal paper for the making of business or banking records
HB 465 This legislation seeks to regulate Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM). The Chamber went neutral on the bill.
HB 2156 Bans companies from issuing rebate cards that charge consumers dormancy fees or other post-issuance fees. Effective January 1, 2020.
HB 3101 Creates and requires participation in human trafficking training for hotel and motel employees.
HB 3113 Requires an individual or group policy of accident and health insurance to cover one annual office visit for a whole body skin examination for lesions suspicious for skin cancer.
HB 3575 Regulates the use of blockchain technology in the state of Illinois. Effective January 1, 2020.
SB 111 Raises the age limit from 19 to 26 for health insurance to cover anesthetics provided with dental care to individuals diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or developmental disability. Effective January 1, 2020.
SB 1724 Directs the Government Finance Research Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago to issue a report evaluating the setting of water rates throughout the Lake Michigan service area of northeastern Illinois.
SB 2027 Requires IEPA to prioritize unregulated and underregulated landfills that overlie the Mahomet Aquifer, complete pilot project response actions, and identity actions to address threats to human health and the environment. |
HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital
Local HSHS Hospitals in Breese, Greenville & Highland Introduce Online Diabetes Support Group
(Breese, Greenville, Highland, Illinois) – HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Breese and Highland and HSHS Holy Family in Greenville are educating through a new online Diabetes Support Group.
“We are pleased to offer an online Diabetes Support group. Our hope for the Facebook group is to provide an open and interactive way to communicate with our diabetes educators to offer continual emotional and social support to those with diabetes in our community,” shared Megan Stanley, RN, BSN, diabetes nurse educator. “We understand that with diabetes the choices you make each day effect how you feel both today and down the road. With the online support group, we want to provide resources that will assist you in making the best choices for your health and well-being.”
The overall goal of the Facebook support group is to foster a better understanding of diabetes and to broaden the reach to educate patients in the community.
By joining the Facebook group members will be able to engage with others going through the same journey. In addition, members will learn more about managing diabetes and find out about helpful resources.

Second Annual Women, Wellness & Wine Event Hosted by Local HSHS Hospitals
HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese and Highland and HSHS Holy Family Hospital Greenville are hosting their second annual women’s wellness event on Tuesday, September 24 at Olde Wicks Factory in Highland, IL.
Women, Wellness and Wine will open with a wellness vendor fair and social hour from
5 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a nationally-recognized, motivational speaker, Tammy Tiller-Hewitt. Seating is limited and tickets are $10 a person. Tickets must be purchased online
at stjosephshighland.org/womenwellnesswine.
Those who attend will receive one token for a complimentary glass of wine, beer or soda, plus a complimentary gift and swag bag. Appetizers, complimentary chair massages, a photo booth and door prizes will also be available.
“We are excited to offer this event to our communities again this year,” said Deb Elledge, Nurse Navigator at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland. “Women’s health is very important, and we hope to see women of all ages attend to learn, laugh and enjoy a relaxing night out with the girls.”

Gentle/Beginner class on Mondays from 5:00-6:00 pm
Kids Yoga on Wednesdays from 4:00-4:45 (ages 6-10)
Mommie and Me on Saturdays from 10:30-11:00 (ages 3-5 with an adult).
There is a special Autumnal Equinox Yoga Retreat that will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2019 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at Copper Dock Winery.

Witch's Night Out Shop Hop
The Highland Business Women’s Club is sponsoring a Witches Night Out Shop Hop on Wednesday October 16 and is seeking female owned, retail businesses in Highland city limits to participate. Businesses are asked to stay open until 9 p.m., offer a sale/discount to participants and an attendance prize. The Club is sponsoring all advertising and marketing.
