This year's event turned out to be a beautiful Fall day where everyone could enjoy the comfortable weather, great refreshments and fun entertainment.  The artists, once again, created some amazing chalk drawings to bring color to the streets.

Advocacy

TAX AMNESTY PROGRAM BEGINS THIS WEEK
The Illinois Department of Revenue tax amnesty will take place from 10/1/ - 11/15/19.  This new amnesty program covers periods after June 30, 2011 and prior to July 1, 2018 for the tax amnesty period beginning on October 1, 2019 through November 15, 2019.  For more information on the Dept. of Revenue's tax amnesty program, see here.    

WAGE HISTORY LAW GOES INTO EFFECT 9/29
This summer, Governor Pritzker signed HB 834 into law as PA 101-177, effective September 29, 2019. This legislation is similar to legislation vetoed by former Governor Rauner.

VAPING BAN PICKS UP STEAM
On Monday the Illinois House held a hearing regarding the slew of hospitalizations resulting from vaping-related illness. IDPH testified in support of a ban on flavored vaping products (which the Governor also supports). Of note, several legislators have already introduced flavored tobacco/nicotine bans including Rep. Deb Conroy and Rep. Grant Wehrli.

Local HSHS Hospitals Hosting Blessing of Animals

On October 4, people all over the world celebrate the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals and of Hospital Sisters Health System. In remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, it’s become customary in many places to hold a special Blessing of the Animals ceremony. HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital’s in Breese and Highland are happy to honor that tradition and invite the community and their pets to a Blessing of Animals ceremony.​ 


HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland Offers CPR AED Class

(HIGHLAND, IL) – HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland is offering a Community Heartsaver CPR AED American Heart Training Course on Tuesday, October 15 in the hospital’s Sullivan Room at 6 p.m. This course is free; however, space is limited and pre-registration is required.  For more information, contact Caitlin Sullivan at 618-651-2583 or email at caitlin.sullivan@hshs.org.

Clogged Arteries in Legs Pose Major Health Risk​

(HIGHLAND, IL) – September is Peripheral Artery Disease Awareness month. Peripheral artery disease affects as many as 12 million people in the United States, and increases in prevalence with age. One in every eight Americans over age 60 have PAD but only 25% of the general population is aware of the disease, which is why HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland’s Wound Care Center wants to educate the community on this critical health issue.  continue reading

Witches Night Out Shop Hop
Wednesday Oct. 16th

Grab your best Witches for a night out in Highland shopping local, female owned businesses. The Highland Business Womens Club is hosting a Witches Night Out Shop Hop Wednesday October 16 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Thirteen participating businesses will be offering sales/discounts and attendance prizes to celebrate Women in Business Week.

Costumes are encouraged but not required. Put on your best witchy wear and dust off your broom to enter a costume contest! More details to come.
