Pulse Personal Training Weekly Health Tip

Pulse Personal Training is excited to partner with the Chamber to bring you tips for healthy living every week!  Today’s tip: "Practice the Pause" with deep breathing.

Let’s face it, life can be stressful!  Even our best laid plans can go off course and we must, sometimes quickly, roll with the changes. It can be as simple as pausing and breathing in for 3-5 seconds and then exhale for the same time, repeat 3 times. It’s amazing how just practicing a pause can reframe your thoughts and set you back on course. Deep breathing can be part of your daily mediation or relaxation and can be practiced before the stress arrives. Give it a try and see what a difference pausing can make in how you react to things you cannot control!

HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Highland

The HSHS St. Joseph’s Foundation would like to thank all who sponsored and participated in our virtual wine tasting event, Sip, Savor & Support that was held on June 26.  It was a great evening, and we are thrilled to share that we raised almost $44,000 to benefit HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland. Proceeds from this event will be used to support surgical equipment enhancements, including the purchase of lifesaving equipment for patients with digestive issues. Thank you again for all of your support.

Keeping Kids Safe Around Water this Summer

As the weather heats up and more children and families head to pools and beaches, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland wants to remind parents and caregivers to always keep an eye on their kids and actively supervise them when they are in and around water.

While it might seem like children would be at a higher risk for drowning at a crowded community pool,  most drownings among children ages 1 to 4 occur in home swimming pools, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among those ages 1 to 14, fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death behind motor vehicle crashes.

“It is important to keep in mind that a drowning child...continue reading

Safety Tips Regarding Food Handling, Preparation and Storage during summer months

Preventing a food-borne illness can be a bit more challenging during the summer months when temperatures rise and more people enjoy outdoor picnics, barbecues and camping.

Kayla Barnes, RD, LD, clinical dietitian at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Breese and Highland and HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville, says bacteria grow faster in warmer months because hot and humid conditions cause it to multiply. Bacteria can potentially double in as little as 20 minutes.

“The key to a healthy and happy summer gathering is keeping food temperature and time in mind. And when in doubt, throw it out.”

St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Breese and Highland and Holy Family Hospital recommend the following food safety practices:  continue reading

Local HSHS Hospitals Encourage Lawn Mower Safety this Summer

Each year thousands of individuals are injured while mowing the lawn. These injuries can be as simple as a first degree burn to something as tragic as an amputation or even death. HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Breese and Highland and HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville urge the public to use caution while mowing, especially when children are involved.
