HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Happenings!

HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland Honors
Nursing Staff for Clinical Development Growth

HIGHLAND— HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland recently honored four registered nurses (RNs) who continued their clinical development growth by participating in the hospital’s Nursing Clinical Ladder (NCL) program.

The NCL promotes the lifelong pursuit of expertise of the clinical nurse. The overall goal of the program is to continue to provide high quality nursing care and opportunities for clinical nurses to experience professional growth and advancement. To apply for the program, nurses must complete a pledge of participation to commit to the program over a determined period of time.

There are four levels of clinical growth outlined in the program, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each level outlines requirements for achievement that increase the higher the level.  These include references from co-workers/managers and some exemplars (written illustrations of the nurse’s professional practice) about patients the nurse has cared for and learned from. Nurses are also required to have a selection of continuing education pertinent to their unit.

St. Joseph’s recently honored the following RNs who continued their clinical development growth in the NCL program:
  • Lyndsey Gelly for Platinum Level
  • Holly Deien, Emily Duffin and Stephanie Grant for Silver Level

Each level has monetary awards for recipients who achieve that level, funded by the HSHS St. Joseph’s Foundation. A total of $6,000 was divided amongst the four individuals depending on the level of achievement reached.

Teresa Cornelius, chief nursing officer, shared, “I congratulate these nurses whose participation in this program demonstrates their commitment to advancing their knowledge, leadership and practice excellence. Their dedication ultimately leads to higher quality care for our patients.”

HSHS Illinois Division offering nursing scholarships up to $20,000

BREESE, HIGHLAND & GREENVILLE Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) Illinois Division recently announced a scholarship opportunity for students pursuing a career in nursing. The HSHS Scholars program is open to qualifying students attending an accredited nursing program. Students can earn up to $20,000 of funding for educational expenses. In addition to financial help, recipients will have a job upon graduating and passing boards in an HSHS Illinois Division hospital.
“I recommend applying for the HSHS scholarship program because it is a great way to help pay for school and also gives you a head start in starting your career in nursing,” said Ciarra Marreo, RN, a recent recipient of HSHS Scholars funding. “Once graduating, the anxiety you feel preparing for the NCLEX and searching for a job is intense. This scholarship ensures that you have a job in your desired specialty after graduation and the residency program is very beneficial in helping new grads grow.

HSHS is a multi-institutional health care system that cares for patients in 14 communities in Illinois and Wisconsin. With nine hospitals in Illinois, scores of community-based health centers and clinics, nearly 2,300 physician partners, and more than 13,000 colleagues, HSHS is committed to its mission “to reveal and embody Christ’s healing love for all people through our high-quality Franciscan health care ministry.

For additional questions about the HSHS Scholars program, email ILscholarships@hshs.org. For other career opportunities in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical positions, visit www.careers.hshs.org.

Dr. Peter Kim, HSHS Medical Group Gastroenterologist

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month:
New recommendations encourage colon cancer screenings at the age of 45
HIGHLAND— HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland and HSHS Medical Group recognize Colon Cancer Awareness Month in March and remind all about an important update in colon cancer screening recommendations announced late last year.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and the American Cancer Society now recommend adults age 45 to 75 be screened for colon cancer, and adults age 76 to 85 ask their doctor if they should be screened. Previously, it was recommended adults begin colon cancer screening at age 50. The reduction in age from 50 to 45 is in part due to findings from the USPSTF that an estimated 10.5% of new colorectal cancer cases occur in persons younger than 50 years.
