Highland Welcome Club with Janet Nicolaides

The Welcome Club of Highland was established over 50 years ago as a way to welcome new residents to Highland.  Over the years, Jane Widmer, Janet Flamm Jenny, and most recently, Patti Parker have done this and now I have been offered to take it over and am so excited to do so.

The Welcome Club is made so successful only by the business owners who choose to sponsor it.  The cost is $25 per month and the business supplies what they want to put in the bag.  A brochure, novelty item, business card or a coupon are what are currently in the bags.
I will visit approx. 25 new residents each month, give them a bag, and help make them aware of what our great town has to offer.  The club has never charged churches, civic organizations or not for profit.  I feel that, you as a business owner, participating in the Welcome Club, also helps support these organizations and churches.

I was a business owner in Highland for 25 years and in 2021, sold it only to realize how much I missed the public.  So when Patti called and asked if I wanted to take over, I was thrilled!!  I love this town, our businesses, and it's people.
I will work closely with our Chamber of Commerce and our City to bring you, the business owner, the best exposure I can.  I hope to set up a Facebook page soon.

I am open to any and all suggestions and would love to see the Welcome Club grow and can only do so with your support. Soooo, who wants to hop on board and be a part of this awesome club and help fill those welcome bags with lots of goodies??
Thank you and thanks to the sponsors who support the Welcome Club!
Janet Nicolaides

HCS Announces Update on Build Out Completion

Highland communication Service will Complete Build Out within City Limits

Ten years after the first customer was connected, Highland Communication Services will complete the phase I build out of their nationally recognized fiber to the premise (FTTP) project.  In the middle June, HCS staff alongside contractors with Best Group, began boring work on Daiber Rd, west of 160.  The subdivisions known as Lakeview, Prestige and Evergreen Estates are the last three areas inside of the city limits to receive Highland’s tripe play service.
The original FTTP project was funded through Build America Bonds and is being paid by through customer use charges.  Construction in recent neighborhoods was funded through customer use fees and this current construction is being funded through American Rescue and Recovery Act funds.
Currently, 2630 Highland residents have chosen HCS over the local competitor, which is a 64% take rate.  The anticipated take rate was 32% and customer count was expected to be 1200 when the project was approved in 2010.   The service was recognized as the 5th best valued service in America by a Harvard University study.  The same study found HCS saves it customers about 44% over the local competitor.
Lakeview Estates resident Matt Caminiti is looking forward to the service for more reason than one.  “I’m excited to have HCS fiber in our neighborhood.  Having an option against Charter/Spectrum drives prices lower, even if you don’t switch to HCS,” he said.
Caminiti serves on the Technology Innovation Program board for the City of Highland and he understands the value of municipal broadband.  “HCS fiber provides improved experiences over Charter while saving money or getting more speed for the value.  I can get 1 gigabit download and upload for the same price Charter is charging me for 400 mb/s download 15 mb/s upload.   Charter has always tried to entice users with more download speed while significantly limiting upload,” he said.
HCS will allow customers to sign up for their service the minute they can be served.  They hope to complete the three remaining subdivisions by late this Fall.
Check out HCS products and services at:  https://www.highlandil.gov/departments/technology_and_innovation/products_and_services.php
Or contact HCS at hcs@highlandil.gov or 618-654-1519 for details about their service offerings.
