Plumas-Sierra Telecommunications Restores Service After Cyberattack |
|
|
|
The electronic system controlling Plumas-Sierra Telecommunication’s internet service was cyber-attacked the night of Nov. 3, reports Emily Compton, energy services manager with PST’s parent company, Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative. This caused a disruption in service to all PST customers. “We worked the entire weekend to identify the problem, remedy it, and restore service,” said Compton. “We are working with the appropriate government authorities to identify the attacker, but we cannot provide further information at this time.”
According to PST, service to all residential customers has been restored. Compton suggests that any customers still without service try power cycling their modem and router. Customers still without service after rebooting their equipment may call technical support at (888) 246-0047 for fiber, wireless, and satellite services and (844) 259-1439 for coax services. “Again, we understand the impact this outage has had on the communities we serve and do not take that lightly,” said Compton. PST will provide more details regarding the outage as they become available. Compton expressed gratitude to customers for their patience and to the crews who worked to restore service as quickly as possible. |

Corporate prayer is used to open and or close the meetings of many groups including
AA, Rotary, several service organizations, and our very own Curmudgeons for Christ at the Community United Methodist Church. Many of these groups use the “Lord’s Prayer,” the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples. Most of us can recite that prayer from memory. In fact, most of us can’t ever remember not knowing that prayer. It is part of our collective memory as Christians.
The Anglican Church uses many liturgical prayers that are in the “Book of Common
Prayer.” As Methodists we tend more toward extemporaneous prayers. That doesn’t mean we don’t use established prayers. In fact, the prayer the Curmudgeons for Christ uses to close our gatherings is known as the Collect for Purity from the “Book of Common Prayer.” The prayer dates to the 10th century and was included in the First “Book of Common Prayer” in 1552. We Curmudgeons may look that old, but we haven’t been meeting near that long. (Well, maybe one or two of us have.)
We started using the Collect for Purity many years ago when one of our First members
who was a Methodized Episcopalian introduced it. The guys had a hard time memorizing it, so our recovering Episcopalian printed it and taped it to the door of the meeting room for all to see. We have been using it ever since. I don’t know who that person was and even Greg Margason doesn’t remember. He thinks his name was Fred or Frank.
We were not known as Curmudgeons back then. The name came much later when the
guys sat in the back corner of the church on Sunday mornings. Charlotte Walters refused to sit there and told Greg Margason she was not going to sit in the Curmudgeon corner. The name stuck. In fact, it was adopted as a badge of honor. We have become fewer in number over the years but we continue to meet each Saturday morning at 9:00 in the fellowship hall. We would welcome anyone who would care to join us. We are not really curmudgeons, we just like the name. And we will tape the prayer to the wall so you don’t have to memorize it.

2023 Project Highlight: This year Lost Sierra Food Project initiated an exciting project with funding from the CDFA Farm to School initiative. The Farm to School funding furthered our partnerships with Plumas Charter School and Plumas Unified as we hosted 22 field trips at Rugged Roots Farm. The goal was to familiarize K-12 students with vegetable and fruit production, introduce them to our farmers, and build enthusiasm for local food and farming.
In addition, the project aims to bridge farm education to school nutrition by bringing more locally grown produce into school cafeterias. In August our staff hosted a farm tour, tasting, and education event for cafeteria managers and food service workers to orient them to Plumas grown produce. It was also an important venue to receive feedback and better understand challenges and opportunities in getting local fruit and veggies on the school lunch plate. This project has funding for another year so stay-tuned about activities and more local food in school lunches in 2024.
