Average homebuyers need to make $106,500 to comfortably afford a home
A recent Zillow report shared that some people are relying on financial gifts to help cover the cost of a down payment for a home or moving to low-cost cities to find affordable housing.
This report shows that the homebuyer needs to make $47K more today than they did in 2020 to afford a home. That means average homebuyers would need to make $106,500 today to comfortably afford a moderately-priced home. This is above the typical U.S. households earning of $81,000. With the cost of housing skyrocketing over the past four years, a monthly mortgage payment on a home in the U.S. has risen to an average of $2,188. To add to this, home values are on the rise, having increased 42.4% over the past four years.
The rise in the cost of housing is caused by multiple factors, one being the cost of materials. This rise in material cost directly affects the price of the home. The challenge becomes how to help with the rising cost of building so the home price does not rise, and the homebuyer is able to afford a home.
Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) just rolled out their 2024 financial options for builders, municipalities and homeowners. Among the programs available, there is the Infrastructure Access Loan, The Vacancy to Vitality Loan, and the Restore Main Street Loan. To learn more about these and other programs visit WHEDA at www.wheda.com.
