"Thank you QUINCY --------------------------------
Hello everyone! Please excuse my boldness in posting something here that isn’t strictly related to a trail-related need, but this is a personal need due to everything that the city of Quincy and its people have meant to me. I wanted to share that yesterday, August 26th, 2024, I completed my PCT journey.
Walking this trail and through these lands has been a dream I’ve been working towards since 2019, when countless "negative" things happened in my life, forcing me to find a new direction. I poured so much of my energy into this... into hiking the Pacific Crest Trail! And today, I am proud to say that I did it. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without your help! Quincy will forever be a city I carry with me, all the way back to my small country in South America. I hope that if you ever decide to visit, you’ll remember that once, a Uruguayan walked through your lands and shared in your spirit.
You didn’t just help me fulfill my dream of hiking the PCT. You also helped me live the dream of watching my country compete in the sport that all Uruguayans love. Just look at my trail shirt—it’s my country’s national football team jersey. I love that I’ve left even the smallest trace of Uruguay in your lands, in your minds, and in your hearts. Fortune smiled on me! And on that day when you helped me get to Las Vegas to see Uruguay play, I witnessed the most epic football match of my life, where my country defeated a football giant like Brazil.
I don’t know how else to express my gratitude! What you do for these souls, full of emotions, traveling this trail from the Mexican border to the Canadian border is truly incredible. You don’t know us, yet you give us everything! I’m taking that attitude and way of being back home with me, and I hope to live up to everything I’ve learned from you.
Once again, thank you, Quincy." - Diego Acuna |

Insurance Commissioner Lara Invites Public Input on Final Phase of New Wildfire Modeling Regulation |
|
|
In a California “first,” insurance companies will write more policies in wildfire distressed areas
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara is inviting public input as he begins the final phase of approving a “first of its kind” catastrophe modeling and ratemaking regulation that will help restore options for all Californians and prepare for the reality of climate change. Today, the Office of Administrative Law published the regulation online, marking the beginning of a public comment period that will conclude with a hearing convened by Commissioner Lara on September 17. The regulation has received strong public support in two previous public meetings the Department has held.
Today’s announcement marks the latest step to enacting Commissioner Lara’s Sustainable Insurance Strategy to safeguard the integrity of the state’s insurance market -- keeping California on track for a December 2024 goal of enacting the state’s largest insurance reform in over 30 years.
“Climate change is affecting every part of our lives, making insurance harder to find and more costly for those at the greatest risk. With climate-driven mega-fires burning across the state, it is clear that relying on decades-old regulations only hurts our ability to prepare for the future,” said Commissioner Lara. “My strategy will help modernize our marketplace, restoring options for consumers while safeguarding the independent, transparent review of rate filings by my Department’s rate regulation experts.”
The regulation posted today details the commitments that insurance companies must make in future rate filings to write more policies in wildfire distressed areas as a condition for using wildfire catastrophe modeling to more accurately assess wildfire risks they will write. The regulation also provides for the public review of models used in ratemaking, as required under California law. This marks two “firsts” for the state’s regulation of insurance rates: The first time insurance companies will commit to cover higher risk homes in wildfire distressed areas, and the first use of forward-looking wildfire catastrophe modeling.

Another Season in the Books |
|
|
The 2024 Youth Crew season has officially wrapped! With support from a $23,270 National Forest Foundation grant, the crews maintained 2.2 miles of the Haskell Peak Trail in Graeagle and 6.2 miles of the North Yuba Trail in Downieville. This work included clearing out fallen or hazardous trees, restoring tread to prevent erosion, maintaining and building new drains, armoring and a LOT of brushing. The two youth crews also built new trail on Upper Tollgate on Mount Hough this season and worked on several trails in the Lakes Basin. We had an amazing group of teenagers on staff this summer and are so appreciative of all their hard work making Dirt Magic!

PG&E Resumes Undergrounding Power Lines |
|
|
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is resuming work to underground power lines in Plumas County.
Due to the amount of time work was paused because of the Park Fire, PG&E needs to accelerate the schedule. Work hours on this project will be Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Burying powerlines is the most effective solution to reducing the risk of wildfire from electrical equipment, reducing the risk of ignitions in areas at the highest risk of wildfire by nearly 98%. Undergrounding also makes power more reliable by reducing outages caused by winter storms, and in some cases eliminates the need for safety shutoffs.
Motorists are advised to allow for more time when traveling these routes and can expect delays of about 15 minutes at locations on Highway 89 and up to 30 minutes at locations on Highway 70 except for holidays, until the projects are completed in 2025 after breaks for winter weather.
For questions and more information about road impacts, call PG&E’s Community Rebuild Line at 800-254-5810. Work is taking place: Throughout the town of Greenville with most work in the areas of Hot Springs Road, Hideaway Road, Forgay Avenue and Alta Camp Road. This work is taking place through the end of October.
On Highway 70 from Paxton to the Spanish Creek campground. Work for this project will continue through late October. On Highway 70 from Virgilia to Grays Flat. Work for this project will continue through late October. On Highway 70, from Elephant Tunnel working toward Caribou Road. Work began in December of 2022 with breaks during winter and will continue through late October. You can read about PG&E’s data privacy practices at PGE.com/privacy. |
