Plumas County Tourism Honoring Women's Month |
|
|
Plumas County has a rich history, from gold mining to ranching to the internationally recognized
stairway of power. In honor of Women’s History Month, we are again profiling some notable women who impacted Plumas County. From the indigenous women leaders who fought to preserve their culture to the pioneering women who
pushed boundaries in science, education, and civic development, Plumas County has been shaped by bold, unstoppable women. These women in history not only influenced this region but also contributed to the broader narrative of women in history, and their legacies are still very much alive.
For Women’s Month and International Women’s Day (March 8th), Plumas County Tourism continues to recognize and acknowledge the women who were noteworthy in Plumas County and beyond.

Egg Shortage Solutions: Delicious Substitutes You Can Try: Message from The Feather River CO-OP
Our shelves have been struggling to keep eggs in stock due to the ongoing Avian Flu outbreak (H5N1), which has led to a significant supply shortage. We understand that this is frustrating, especially for those who rely on eggs for daily meals, baking, and cooking. Rest assured, we are doing everything we can to manage this challenge, but in the meantime, we wanted to share some helpful egg substitutes that you can find at our stores.
For baking, there are several great egg replacements that can help maintain texture and consistency in your recipes. A common substitute is unsweetened applesauce—use 1/4 cup of applesauce for each egg needed. Mashed bananas are another excellent choice, especially for cakes or muffins, where their natural sweetness complements the flavor. For savory baked goods like pancakes or waffles, yogurt (dairy or non-dairy) works well, with about 1/4 cup of yogurt replacing one egg. Chia seeds or flaxseed meal mixed with water (1 tablespoon of seeds or meal + 3 tablespoons water) can also mimic the binding and leavening qualities of eggs, making them perfect for cookies, cakes, and even bread!
For breakfast, if you’re missing scrambled eggs or omelets, try making a tofu scramble. Simply crumble firm tofu in a pan, and sauté it with your favorite veggies, nutritional yeast, and seasonings for a hearty, egg-like dish. Chickpea flour can be used to make a quick vegan omelet; simply whisk with water to form a batter and cook just like an egg-based omelet.
Finally, you can find products such as Just Egg and Bob’s Red Mill egg replacer at both of our stores locations. These are great plant-based options that remain unaffected by recent supply chain disruptions.
These substitutes can be just as delicious and satisfying as traditional eggs. We hope you’ll give them a try. Thank you for your understanding as we work through this shortage. We are committed to keeping you informed and continuing to find solutions during this difficult time. Please visit this page for up-to-date reports about our stocking shortages.

From the Almanor Foundation Updates: Attainable Workforce Housing Second in Housing Series with Updates
The foundation has contributed significantly to the recovery efforts, with over $409,710 allocated to housing initiatives in Plumas County. The focus is on workforce-attainable housing, targeting those earning between 80-120% of the Average Median Income. TAF is not just providing funds. We are involved in shaping the housing landscape with several key programs and the formation of the Plumas County Housing Council.
Who is in the Plumas Housing Council? |
|
|
A Collaborative Force
The Plumas Housing Council (PHC) includes community members, businesses, county agencies and non-profits. The PHC serves as a platform to track projects and coordinate efforts to build homes that are attainable for our workforce, supporting both rental and home ownership.
The PHC is working to create an understanding of the housing landscape by mapping existing programs and their target demographics. The County is also working to support housing efforts through policy and financial support. A housing assessment and economic market study for Plumas County are also being funded through a Community Development Block Disaster Recovery Grant or CDBG DR Planning Grant. This assessment will help to define the housing needs and opportunities across Plumas County in an ever-changing landscape.
The PHC is currently focused on several key programs, which are aimed at addressing different aspects of the Plumas County's attainable housing needs:
Build to Rent (B2R): This program aims to develop 45 rental units on 15 single-family zoned sites within three years, pooling investments to support development. The Almanor Foundation, Dixie Fire Collaborative and the North Valley Community Foundation have already committed $500,000 to the B2R program.
Lease to Locals (L2L): This program focuses on getting underutilized housing into the long-term attainable market by providing one-year rent subsidies. Plumas Rural Services is partnering with Placemate, (nationwide company that first gained success in Tahoe/Truckey) to manage this program with funds for first year programming provided by TAF, DFC and NVCF.
Trio Program/Housing Marketing: The Plumas County Community Development Commission (PCCDC) has an existing lease-to-own program (Trio) that requires marketing to make the program successful. Since marketing of all the programs is critical, this is a way to leverage resources and combine efforts around housing to tell a clear and cohesive story with regard to rentals/owners, incomes, locations.
Additional programs the PHC tracks include a community funded build to sell project, downpayment assistance programs, and a county-wide housing assessment. These and others will be covered in future articles.
*Please note: This initiative is actively evolving as the council makes inroads and progress. This series aims to provide background and “where we are today” with news as it develops. |

The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship: Introducing 5 Bucks a Foot: The Lakes Basin Edition Donate to support SBTS’ work in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area and win a stay at the Cabins at Gold Lake! |
|
|
This week, Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship launched a new 5 Bucks a Foot fundraising campaign to support ongoing maintenance work in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, where SBTS has been working for two decades. With funding and staffing cuts at the federal level, we need support more than ever to keep trails throughout the Lost Sierra maintained and open for all to enjoy—here’s a way to support our work in the Basin and win a super sweet prize package while you’re at it!
This campaign works like other 5 Bucks a Foot fundraisers—donate $5 (the estimated cost of building one foot of trail) and get a chance to win an amazing prize package. This one is highlighted by a two-night stay this September at the coveted boat-in Cabins at Gold Lake, a cozy cabin on the literal shores of pristine Gold Lake and surrounded by trails, and includes a guided hiking or biking adventure led by our new venture Yuba Expeditions Adventure Guides, a $200 gift package from Lost Sierra Wine Company and gear from Outdoor Products and Outdoor Vitals. Each donation made between now and March 25 gets you a new chance to win, and this campaign is open to our supporters globally.
