FREE Speaker Series: Health & Climate Change

Dr. Krawisz studies how human health is affected by climate change.  Human activities have caused approximately 1°C (1.8°F) of global warming since 1750.  According to the International Panel on Climate Change, global warming will likely reach 1.5°C (2.7°F) between 2030 and 2050.  We are already seeing early consequences of global warming such as larger and more powerful hurricanes, more wildfires, drought in the US Southwest, rising sea levels, increased range of insect vectors of disease, and higher temperatures throughout the world.  The American College of Physicians has described climate change as potentially devastating to human health (Ann Intern Med. 2016, 164:608-610).  Scientific solutions to climate change and career choices in light of climate change are presented.  Politics is not included.

Situational Awareness in the Workplace and at Home

Situational awareness involves being aware of your immediate surroundings and the impact of your or other’s actions as it relates to the well-being of yourself and those around you. The term has received considerable attention in the military community for the last decade because of its recognized link to effective-decision making in the tactical environment. Knowing your surroundings and being able to react to them are important skills for military and law enforcement professionals but can also be an important skill for members of a community or in a work environment. It’s also important to remember that what you perceive as happening in your surroundings may not completely represent reality. How you read a situation could be easily influenced by distractions, personal experiences, and the quality of the type and level of information that you have been given. In the workplace, knowing how serious the problems you face are, and how numerous, is crucial to your ability to avoid accidents, injuries, or even deaths. Improving situational awareness should give you a better understanding of potential risks and how you can avoid them. This class will explore techniques used by Navy SEALS to provide a way for you to think differently about your workplace and/or community to gain an understanding of existing weaknesses, ways to prepare for and react when a situation occurs, and human nature.
